Within the nursing world, there are five stages that a nurse progresses through in their career. Dr. Benner’s theory created a five stage model that provided a framework for professional development for nurses (Hawkins, 2013). The model delineates over time and skill acquisition necessary to achieve expert status, which is the ultimate goal. The five stages that nurses must proceed through are novice, advance beginner, competent, proficient, and expert. The novice is the beginner or nurse without experience. The healthcare system is ever changing and it is must that I keep up. Learning opportunities will give me the chance to update and receive new information for a consistently changing work environment. My day to day work and interaction with different patients will add on value to my background of experience and experience supports expertise. Expertise has a positive effect on the quality care provided to patients (Hill, 2010). Good leaders are also needed. There needs to be leaders on the floor and in management positions that can effectively give guidance. Good leaders can help create a suitable working environment. I do not know anyone who likes to work or can handle working in a stressful environment. Teaching done by good leaders will help me effectively plan and organize patient care assignments, thus increasing my speed and flexibility. Benner laid out a five stage model for nurses on how to become proficient clinical decision makers. Nurses transition from novice, advance beginner, competent, proficient, to expert. Each stage has a time frame and skill acquisition associated with it that builds on one another. At this point in my career, I am at the competent stage of Dr. Benner’s model progressing steadily to the proficient stage. I feel successful in my practice and it is very satisfying. Becoming an expert nurse is the ultimate goal. At that stage in my career I will feel accomplished and able to then become an effective leader to help novice nurses reach expert status.
