The spectacled flying fox (Pteropus conspicillatus) (SFF) is one of the seven flying fox species found in Australia. There are several types of threats impacting both the habitat and population numbers/distribution of the SFF. These include habitat loss, mortalities due to human interaction, mortalities due to tick paralysis and to a lesser extent, birth abnormalities. Beginning in the late 1980’s, SFF afflicted with tick paralysis have been described in populations from the Atherton Tablelands in Queensland, Australia. Paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) attachment to SFF results in severe debilitation or mortality creating a rehabilitative need for the adults as well as their dependent offspring.
