The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, is a program that is set up to offer nutrition assistance to millions of eligible, low-income individuals and families. Additionally, it provides economic benefits to the communities. SNAP is the “food stamp” program that John is referring to in the scenario. The first thing John wants to know is if he is eligible for SNAP and how much can he receive. If John wants to find out if he is eligible for the program than he should log onto his computer and visit http://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/supplemental-nutrition-assistance-program-snap. On this website you can find a tab where it shows your eligibility requirements. To get SNAP benefits, John’s household must meet certain requirements, including some resource and income tests. On the website there is a pre-screening tool that can also assist him in finding out his eligibility. Also, a quicker way to find out would be to head to your local SNAP office. After finding out if he is eligible or not, John can then use the allotment calculator to find out how much he could potentially receive. The calculator takes the net monthly income of the household, multiplies it by .3, and the result is subtracted from the maximum allotment for the household size.
