As Eugene Cernan said, “Today, we are on a path of decay. We are seeing the book close on five decades of accomplishments as the leader in human space exploration.” This will be the gloomy outcome if we let the government stop funding space exploration. We should have our Space Exploration program because it furthers our knowledge of the universe, results in new technologies, provides American jobs, and evokes curiosity in everyday people.

While it is true that NASA is an acronym for National Aeronautics and Space Administration, we must remember that NASA’s vision is “To reach for new heights and reveal the unknown so that what we do and learn will benefit all humankind.” This includes both advances in Aeronautics, Space, and in fields that benefit many Americans in their day to day lives. While working towards inventing new and better innovations for space, NASA ends up inventing something new for everyday use. Right now, hundreds of people are waiting for a life saving heart transplant, a reality that would look very bleak, mournful, and depressing if not for the Ventricular Assist Device, (VAD), keeping these children, mothers, fathers, grandparents, and loved ones alive and well while awaiting their heart transplant. Our American Space Program, NASA, is responsible for this superior technology, VAD, that is keeping these well loved people alive marvelously. Without the help of NASA, many people would be relying on older, less conventional methods of support. This is not the only breakthrough from NASA. USA Today offered a list of the “Top 25 Scientific Breakthroughs” that have occurred in its 25 years, and nine of them came from space, eight directly from NASA. Breakthroughs that were on this list included NASA’s COBE probe mapping the fiery aftermath of the Big Bang and confirming that chlorofluorocarbons were eating the stratospheric ozone. Other inventions that are here with the help of NASA include infrared ear thermometers, artificial limbs, anti-icing systems for airplanes, devices that safely destroy landmines, firefighter gear, and many
