The author is mostly talking about the slaves, and that they were abused or persecuted. The slaves tried to run away, to live freely. The owners were not going to be a problem; it was the slave patrol men because they would catch the slaves and sell them or kill them. I thought it was interesting, but sometimes it was hard to understand the text because some of the vocabulary was unfamiliar. The book informed me a lot about the civil war, slaves, and Abraham Lincoln’s role in trying to free the blacks. It was meaningful to me because people in the 19th century went through many struggles during that era that I did not know how rough it was for the slaves. I liked how Abraham Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation in order to free the slaves. I do not like slavery just as Abraham Lincoln did not. It was very wrong to have slaves. It is wrong to judge people by color, and be treated differently because of the color of their skin. We have learned from these mistakes, and have created laws against discriminating against other races. It is the same with history; we do not want to repeat it again. The audience for this book is people who really like history and people who like to read books about the civil war era. The book should be read by college students that really enjoy history; they would like the book a lot. If you are not really into history, this book may be boring to
