South Beach Diet Case Study

Decent Essays
The South Beach Diet was developed in 2003 by Arthur Agatston. This diet isn’t complicated, it doesn’t limit calories, no fixed percentage of macronutrients, and it doesn’t require carbohydrate counting. Clients will eat 3 meals and 2 snacks per day. This diet has 3 phases, phase 1 last two weeks. Foods that are excluded from the diet during this phase are fruits, starchy vegetables, grains, alcohol, and sweets. Food that is allowed during this phase are low fat dairy, vegetables, lean meats, nuts, and high protein low kcal deserts. During phase two, fruits, starchy veggies, and whole grains are reintroduced slowly. Phase 2 will last until the client reaches their weight loss goal. During this phase, weight loss will average 1-2 lbs. per week. …show more content…
The rationale for meeting these goals are the following. The focus of the diet is on eating low glycemic carbohydrates during phase 1. The point of this is to limit glucose spikes that make people want to eat more frequently (Agatston, 2003). A study compared a moderate carb low glycemic (MCLG) diet with a moderate carb high glycemic diet, and the MCLG was more effective than the other at reducing weight, supporting the South Beach Diet’s claim (Juanola, 2014). The South Beach Diet is a moderate carb diet, a study found that short term moderate carb diets had more weight loss than a control group in obese adolescents (Truby, 2016). Although the book says that meal choices can be both high or low protein (Agatston, 2003), my meals were high on protein. A study comparing protein content in diets found that high protein diet had a more pronounced weight loss in overweight people and also helped with weight maintenance after the weight loss (Aller, …show more content…
in the first phase (Lee). During phase 2 slower, but progressive weight loss will occur. By phase 3 clients will have learned how to eat healthy and maintain weight off (Agatston, 2003). A review of clinical trials found that this diet was modestly effective for short term weight loss but only achieved modest sustained weight loss long term (Atallah, 2014). The South Beach Diet is a popular weight loss diet and not used for medical nutrition therapy. Another review of popular weight loss diets analyzed different combinations of suggested meals and found that on a 3 day average only 6 of 27 micronutrient’s DRI’s were met at 100%
