I`m going to talk about the video’s basic content and context, its key formal elements, and analyse its construction of meaning.
The beginning to every episode of The Sopranos starts with the view provided of HBO`s own branding; A screen full of static appears and the disappears to reveal their logo.
The sequence opens with the view coming from the interior of a car exiting a tunnel and getting on the new jersey turnpike. We see a quick shot of the driver’s hand adjusting the radio. The car-ride itself serves as our introduction to the main character named Tony and establishes the series` context and setting. The shifting focus and movements of the camera might suggest the subjectivity of the viewer sitting beside Tony watching what happens on the ride. Instead of showing the main character directly, we gradually see his arms, then his face, cigar and body. The shots of New Jersey passing by is intercut with the mysterious fragmented shots of Tony which makes up ¼ of the total 60 shots that`s in the title sequence.. …show more content…
The rhythm of both this Action and the editing is synchronized with the rhythm of the music. The sequence uses the song Woke Up This Morning by London-based band Alabama 3. The soundtrack sounds busy all the time, but it is also able to build to a climax heard simultaneously with the shots of longer duration at the end of the intro.
