The Sopranos Opening Sequence Essay

How we view shows today is not just based on the episodes themselves anymore. We can now have an idea about what a show is all about by just watching the opening title sequences. No longer do we have to sit through an entire show before deciding if we like it or not. By watching the opening sequence of a show, it allows us to depict what we think the show is about. The HBO logo comes on to the television in full static form before ending with a harmonious choir sound at the end. By doing this HBO wants to show that this is indeed a time for celebration and we can be happy just by watching their network. Unlike other premium networks viewers are fully aware that this channel will be commercial-free, have less government regulations and have more suggestive themes allowed. And by that I mean you can expect to hear curse words, see people getting killed with actual gruesome imagery, nudity, drug use and other suggestive themes. After all this a premium cable network. It gives the audience a chance to enter a realm of curiosity that beneath the layer builds excitement for what they are about to

The images and words used in this logo enable consumers to understand the meaning; although, improvements can be made to ensure the message is conveyed effectively. The main elements of the logo; a carrot, the world, and text, keep it from being too complicated, however the simplicity almost hinders how well the message is expressed. Without reading into the logo too much, the reader can understand the main idea because of the simple design and layout. “Eating” means to eat fruit and vegetables, which links to the carrot on the side of the logo. “Globally” refers to the actual world, and links to the picture of the Earth at the top.…

Sitcoms are a window into the mindset of mainstream America as they move from a very idealistic portrayal of society to a more realistic one, highlighting how American society is becoming more accepting of difference. Sitcoms are the comedic, thirty minute television shows in which the episodes can be viewed alone and still be understood, as long as one has the basic background of the main characters. This formulation was an instant success with the introduction of I Love Lucy in 1951. Sitcoms of the far past, and the ones of today are quite representative of the time periods that they take place in, yet they do still emphasize an idealistic version of society, especially the early ones. Sitcoms such as I Love Lucy and Growing Pains demonstrate…

It can be comfortably stated that the sitcom is ‘arguably the most durable genre’ on television (Edgerton and Ross, 2008, p9). Although there are arguments about the variations between different particular sitcoms themselves, Brett Mills (Mills, 2012) gives an example of a definition of what constitutes a “classic” or “traditional” sitcom. ‘A half-hour series focused on episodes involving recurrent characters within the same premise.…

The worst insult you could give to Barney Rosenzweig, the executive producer of Cagney & Lacey, was to tell him that his work was "too TV.” Twin Peaks was universally praised by critics for being "unlike anything we'd ever seen on television. " In a medium long considered artless, the only artful TV is that which isn't like all the rest of it. Quality TV breaks rules. It may do this by taking a traditional genre and transforming it, as Hill Street Blues, St. Elsewhere, and Moonlighting did to the cop show, the doctor show, and the detective show, respectively.…
