Songhai was built over Mali and Ghana, therefore they inherited most of their resources. The Songhai Empire was located in West Africa, south of the Sahara Desert, and stretched along the Niger River to the Atlantic Ocean. The Songhai Empire was the largest empire, compared to Mali and Ghana. Songhai was known as the land of gold. The Songhai Empire lasted for almost 100 years, but in 1591 a small army from the Arab kingdom of Morocco crossed the Sahara. They were armed with cannons and guns and defeated Songhai's soldiers armed with swords, spears, and bows. Within a few months, the Songhai Empire was gone.
