Love Yourz Music Analysis

E.Y. Harburg said “Words make you think. Music makes you feel. A song makes you feel a thought.” (E.Y. Harburg). This could not be more evident than in the song “Love Yourz” by the rapper J.Cole. This song is about J.Cole sharing his experiences with fame and that he had to reevaluate the things he thought would make him happy. J. Cole also spoke about his troubled childhood struggles and how he is still trying to cope with it. He spoke about the misconception that many people have, which is that money can all solve problems and make you happy. The main point of the song is to appreciate what you have and that fame is not as great as it looks. J.Cole uses numerous devices such as tone, symbolism, imagery and personification to captivate his audience. The tone of this song is extremely vital to the success of this song. In various songs the audience is only captivated by the sounds of the instrument or the beat of the song. Love Yourz has a truly deep meaning and message. Personification is when human attributes are given to something non-human. Such as “I 'm tired of living with demons cause they always inviting more”. Demons are evil spirits or devils so the fact he gave them the attribute of “inviting more” made this personification. Cole uses this to show that he’s tired of dealing with problems and problematic people because they just create more problems for him. The last act of personification was “its beauty in the struggle, ugliness in the success”. Neither struggle nor success can be either beautiful or ugly. But, this act of personification simply helps the listener to understand that the struggle can have some good qualities and success can bad
