In the articles “Elephants can lend a helping trunk” by Virginia Morell, “Elephants know when they need a helping trunk in a cooperative task” by Joshua M. Plotnik, and “Elephants console each other” by Virginia Morell they talk about how elephants played a task where they had to pull a rope with a partner to get food. But if one elephant pulled it alone on one side then the rope would get shorter on the other so they NEEDED to pull together. They had different types of this task for example they had it where it was to short for one elephant to reach so the other didn't bother…

In the novel, Water for Elephants, by Sara Gruen Walter is different than the average sized person because he is a dwarf. According to Merriam-Webster dictionary Walter’s dwarfism is a disability because it is a “condition of being able to do things in a normal way”. Even though Walter did not let size get in the way of letting him live his life, he was still considered to have a disability because his height causes him to perform everyday functions differently. Dwarfism was the cause that Walter was separated from his mother. Where Are You Going? Where Have You Been? By Joyce Carol Oates is the story of Connie, a 15 year old Texan girl, and one fateful summer day. Through characterization and symbolism the author shows that often teenagers rush into the fantasy of adulthood, never expecting how real it can get. By using the summer to represent her fall from innocence, music to show how Connie feels, and her habit of checking her reflection to prove she’s still young and insecure- despite how she may act, Oates provides an intense look at how there is always more to what is going on than initially appears.…

In “The Elephant Man” by Frederick Treves, Treves documents his interactions with Joseph Merrick from their first meeting in November 1884, to his subsequent death in April 1890. Although Treves introduces the Elephant Man as John Merrick, his given birth name was Joseph Merrick. Frederick Treves was a wealthy, accomplished surgeon who was made a Baronet, a member of the aristocracy, by King Edward VII after successfully performing a surgery on the King himself (Keith). Treves was also a lecturer on anatomy; and, after his first meeting with Merrick, wrote a detailed paper documenting Merrick’s deformity to provide insight into the conditions he had. In his essay, Treves reveals prevailing social attitudes surrounding physical deformity in Victorian England in the…

Imperialism is a policy extending a country’s power and influence through diplomacy or military force. In George Orwell’s Shooting an Elephant he portrays evil imperialism through symbols, including Orwell himself, the elephant, and the dead coolie. First off, Orwell represents evil imperialism because he represents authority he represents the people themselves, and he represents a puppet or mask. Orwell represents authority because he is the sub-divisional police officer. Being a police officer, he is in the position to have authority but that doesn’t necessarily mean that he has authority or control or that he was liked.…
