Compassion and love are necessities for human survival. The song “Beauty for brokenness” by Graham Kendrick is a wakeup call for those who are caught up in this self-centred world to show compassion for the poor and suffering people in this world. This song was written in 1993 for the twenty fifth anniversary of “Tear Fund” a charity passionate about ending poverty. Kendrick wrote the song after his visit to India in 1992 and witnessing the contrast between the Indian poverty and Western affluence. The song is also known as “God of the Poor” by its first line of refrain and articulates God’s heart for the broken and poor in this world. It starts with a verse followed by a chorus and repeats the same. The song consists of five verses interspersed with a chorus in between. The chorus and verses are almost similar in length and cannot be distinguished. But the song is very appealing to hear and the chorus which is sung in group is emotionally uplifting and heartrending. The pictures shown in the video are apt and very relevant. The lyrics are simple yet profound as it articulates about human rights and relates a deep spiritual meaning. The refrain appears as a deep cry unto God asking Him to light a fire into our cold hearts. The author uses emotionally appealing images of children and words like “flame”, “tears”, “spark”, “cross”, “pain”, “God of the poor” etc. to make the song powerful and memorable. The song ‘Beauty for Brokenness’ is an endeavour to ignite compassion in the hearts of people toward this broken world. The author does a fine job in communicating about God’s heart for the poor and how our actions can bring beauty for brokenness.
