Reflective Essay On Socratic Seminar

On the day of the Socratic seminar, I was a bundle of nerves, extremely stressed out about how I will perform during the seminar. However, my nervousness slowly disappeared as we conducted the seminar, allowing me to participate more as I realized that the Socratic seminar wasn’t as difficult as I believed it to be. At the end of the seminar, I felt that everyone in my group performed very well, picking up new skills as a result. As I reflect on the discussion that transpired that day, I also felt that I did well, addressing most, if not all, of the areas that lead to a smooth Socratic seminar. Strengths that allowed me to succeed in this Socratic seminar included expanding on ideas that were thrown into the discussion and conveying significant …show more content…
The best way for it to improve for all of us is to participate in it more often so we can practice and gain the skills necessary for a good discussion. Although it may not have happened much, I feel that we should make sure that those who do not talk as much have a chance at participating in each question, so that their voices are heard. In my particular group discussion, I saw that my peer was unable to voice her opinion, and I wanted to direct a question towards her so that she can. However, I was unable to join the discussion since everyone had something to say, and the question switched to the next one before I could ask my peer something in order to let her join. Everyone was very eager to join the discussion, which is very good, but maybe we should have smaller groups with less time. Even though there is less time, students in the smaller groups will get a fair chance at speaking at any time during the discussion, allowing greater performances for everyone, even the quietest students. In conclusion, I feel that I did extremely well on my first Socratic seminar. There are many improvements I need to make, but they will surely be addressed in my future Socratic seminars. Overall, everyone did marvelously, and there isn’t much we can change except practice more so that we can master these discussions and truly improve our communication skills in the

The thing I most enjoyed in the socratic seminar was how easily the ideas flowed. Our class isn’t a shy class so mostly everyone contributed and the discussion time wasn’t wasted on awkward silences. Our class not being shy helped the seminar be successful, we were talkative and brought up interesting points that made you think. Having pre written questions and answers helped too so you could refer to your own notes to add to a comment or answer a question effectively. I feel like the only thing that could be improved would be everyone in the class responding.…

The Socratic Seminar that took place this past Monday, in regards to “Where I Lived, and what I Lived For” by Henry David Thoreau was in my opinion just one example of how much our class needs to improve when it comes to group discussions and analyzations. There is much room for improvement when communicating one’s ideas and opinions, not only in the class but also in myself and this seminar served as good practice. Of course, there were obstacles that were insurmountable when it came to running a smooth seminar such as class size and the number of people discussing at once but some common courtesies were ignored. The sheer number of side conversations that occurred at any one moment was quite troublesome for me personally, as I saw other people actively participating in the group discussion while others were treating them with great disrespect by not paying attention and periodically interrupting them before they could properly explain their input. Remaining on track also seemed to be a constant difficulty that we had to contend with.…

For me personally, the Socratic seminar did help with some of the topics we talked about like about school back then. In that time, a teacher could hit a student and it was okay and excepted it wasn’t really a big deal but now if a teacher hits a student they would get in trouble and possible loss their job. I also found it a bit weird these kids get so much freedom they get to leave school in the middle of the day to go home and eat lunch and then go back to school. In the Socratic seminar, we also talked about Miss. Caroline and how she is still really new to teaching.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

After finishing the English 101 course I feel like I have accomplished many of the goals that I was challenged with the beginning of the course, such as critically thinking and reading with text from the textbook “Dialogues” by Gary Goshgarian, substantively replying to my peers to understand their point of views from the text and to get a better understanding of a rhetorical argument. Thinking and reading critically were very important this whole course. Thinking and reading critically were something you would have to do in every assignment that was given. Incorporating it in every assignment has helped us greatly improve week by week and betters our understanding of each topic and the assignments main idea.…

No matter where you go or went to school, you always have some type of English class that forces you to write papers. These papers usually has to be a certain way or over a certain topic. To me that was a pretty big problem for me because I could do free writing easy, but when you tell me to write about something that I don 't have any interest in and I have to follow your “rules”, then I will just try to blow it off. I have always hated the way Professors and the world had this “image” of their version of a “perfect” essay. I always messed up on the rules like where to put my commas or semicolons, that to me is the hardest part to not have a run- on sentence.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

I have been taking this class for nearly three months. During three months, I learned a lot about small group communication, especially the group climate and interaction are going well in our group. Our group works well on building and keeping positive attitude to our assignments and supportive climate. Each group member devotes to create an atmosphere that our group is the best group. For instance, our group member Erik and Jo always said some words of praise and encouragement, such as “we are really a good group”.…
