The Sociology Of Leopard Man Analysis

Decent Essays
It isn’t always good to conform because you wouldn’t be as unique or as happy if you had the same feelings, beliefs, and actions as any other person. In “The Pedestrian” when Leonard Mead tells the police officer/car that his profession was writing the officer implied that he had no profession. This statement shows that one person could think one thing while another person could think otherwise. Also just because something is considered odd or out of the ordinary it doesn't always mean that it isn’t right. Another example on why conformity isn’t always good is in the article “The Sociology of Leopard Man” when Leppard said “As far as i’m concerned, if there is a paradise on Earth, I’m in it. You’re welcomed to what you’ve got. I’ll keep this”.

Individuality is the quality of a particular person that distinguishes them from others. Often times in the world, we are forced to give up our individuality and conform with others. In Logan Fey’s article, The Sociology of Leopard Man, he claims that to be a human is to be an individual human, with individual tastes, talents, morals, etc. I agree with Fey, that being human is to be an individual, but some of our traits have been influenced by other people, or sometimes we are forced to give up our individuality for certain things, but we all must find our own way of living as ourselves content in society. Being an individual human means that one develops their own personality, attributes, tastes, goals, talents, and morals.…

In the essay, “ The sociology of Leopard Man”,written by Logan Feys talks about how you can lose your sense of individuality living in a perfect society where everything has to be perfect and artificial trying to be someone thing you're not and essentially becoming the perfect person everyone wants. . Feys says that he is unimpressed with people who change their hair dramatically or extreme tattooing and piercings all their doing is seeking attention. I don’t agree with Feys, because if that makes them happy then who cares what people say it’s all about what you think about yourself. If you don’t love yourself and how you look then people won’t either.…

Further analysis will demonstrate the ways in which conforming to the conventions of society can have damaging effects by limiting the individual thoughts of people and their happiness. Society’s behavior is guided by a powerful set of unwritten rules. Those that act outside of the rules receive ridicule, criticism, or rejection. The main driving force which draws people to conform is their desire to feel accepted. In order to feel accepted, people often conform however, “When you adopt the standards and values of someone else, you surrender your own integrity [and] become, to the extent of your surrender, less of a human being”- Eleanor Roosevelt.…

Society trusts those that conform, and distrusts those that that don’t. By conforming to society's expectation, you gain trust from the society. A disadvantage to conforming to society is when you join the group, you’re technically no longer your own individual. George S. Patton once said, “If everyone is thinking alike, then sobody isn’t thinking.” It’s like you’re a sheep, and when you conform to society's beliefs, you join the rest of the herd.…
