I was in grade 10 at the time, so only around the age of sixteen when one of my friends wanted to try smoking. My parents never smoked so I was never exposed to smoking, only when I saw random people on the streets doing it. At that time it was just becoming popular for kids to smoke in high school, a lot of kids we’re doing it. Due to where my school was I was exposed to it at a very young age. I went to school in Rexdale where this most commonly happens. I didn’t want to do it because I knew it was wrong, but to seem cool in the eyes of those I called peers and friends I tried it and it was one of my biggest mistakes. Mass culture and mass media often work hand in hand with each other. In order for this norm to be shared it had to be communicated amongst people through interactions, in this case, it was a one-to-many relationship. This was one-directional and was shown frequently on social media, videos, TV, etc. This was became the social norm because it was guided by our behaviors and our interactions, because I felt so pressured to do it I engaged in that social norm which ultimately reproduced the behavior and made it more
