My Life’s Calling
The social work profession appeals to me because of its call to help others. To me, social work means, advocate, provider of services, helper of others, voice of the voiceless, and change agent. The meaning behind these words signify my call to the profession; along with my deep commitment to working with individuals who have been marginalized because social injustices and economic inequalities. One of my proudest accomplishments was working as a tenant organizer for a grassroots organization called the Pratt Area Community Council (PACC). At PACC I worked with tenants at risk of displacement and played an instrumental role in mobilizing the community to increase the power of the working class residents of Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. This work helped residents to achieve dignity and justice through advocacy, organizing, policy innovation and transformative education. As a result of this work, I was naturally drawn to the profession.
With a lifelong passion for service provision, I have developed an interest in the field of adult education. In my current position as a library literacy specialist I have seen many adult learners struggle to achieve academic success only to be disappointed because of barriers that prevent them from achieving their goals. I have not received failing grades, been on probation, or been dismissed from or denied readmission to any college. I expect to be equally dedicated to the graduate program as I was to the undergraduate. I am disciplined and dedicated to obtaining a Master of Social Work. Hence, after carefully researching different programs I decided to submit an application to the University of Buffalo because of my interest in the course offerings; flexibility of study and accessibility of courses
