V. THE FEMALE VIGILANTE
As seen in the previous section, vigilantes were traditionally upper class males in a group. However, with time, the definition has altered- the modern vigilante is more an individual than a group of people and consists of females as well. In fact, vigilantism is a permissible mode of crime resolution for women backed by the Social Contract Theory. The said theory proposes the existence of a sort of contract between the State and its citizens, wherein the state is obliged to render protection to the citizens in return for peaceful co-existence and respect for the law by them. The women are shown to resort to the use of violence for teaching a lesson. In one instance in the movie, when the central protagonist, played by Madhuri Dixit, Rajjo, does approach the system for the resolution of her problems, she is treated with insensitivity and offered a monetary compensation for a victim of rape whose cause she is advocating. In other instances, the corrupt nature of the officials, ranging from the Collector to the police, is depicted, drawing the audience even more towards accepting the 'Rod is God' philosophy followed by Rajjo and her gang. The only saving grace being that the film portrayed Rajjo surrendering to the police and being bound by law at the very end of the film. The movie shows the gang getting their work done, by resorting their own methods, and then breaking into an impromptu dance sequence at the end of every job, with the lyrics of the song being highly critical of the system, unbelievable action sequences and wonderfully crafted dialogues that seemed anything but spontaneous, making the film seem far from
