Lutheran Settlement House is really the only social service agency within the community. It has been providing services to Fishtown and the Philadelphia area since 1902. The services since then may have changed but it’s core mission of “empowering individuals, families, and communities to achieve and maintain self-sufficiency through an integrated program of social, educational, and advocacy services” has not ("History | Lutheran Settlement House | Empowering Children, Adults, Families, and Communities Since 1902," n.d.). What makes this program unique is that it offers bilingual counseling to its victims. BDVP offers individual counseling, onsite support groups and also specialized groups for incarcerated women. BDVP also partners with local hospitals to offer onsite domestic violence services. They provide education and training on domestic violence for professionals, community member, the workplace and youth. Bilingual domestic violence program also provides transitional housing for women and their children who want to leave their abusers. To be apart of The Fishtown Neighbors Association, you have to live in the neighborhood. The mission of this organization “is to serve the families and neighbors by promoting community involvement, education and safety within Fishtown” ("Fishtown Neighbors Association - Fishtown Neighbors Association," n.d.). The three focal points for Fishtown Neighbors Association are: Beautification, Zoning and Events. The beautification committee keeps the neighborhood appealing by designating specific cleaning days, having flowerpot and planter contests every year, and also works on the painting projects in Fishtown. The zoning committee conducts meetings to inform the community about building projects and then gives the members the opportunity to vote for or against a project. Lastly, the events committee main goal is to bring together the business owners and neighbors through certain events, they do this by throwing events such as, Meet the Neighbors and RiverCity Festival.
