The “Social Location” of Trump During presidential races here in the United States, it is almost always a competition to see who can relate to the greatest amount of citizens. In order to achieve this task, candidates try to accumulate votes from various diverse populations. These may include people with differing economic backgrounds, races, religions, geographical locations, age, gender, etc. One could basically make the claim that the candidate with the ability to successfully target these certain groups has the best chance of becoming president of the United States. For example, look at President Barack Obama when he ran for POTUS in 2008. He appealed to voters because he was African American but, was only half so he could still relate to Caucasians. He also vouched for more religious liberties for minority faiths, more open borders, and healthcare to underprivileged American citizens. With just those few examples, President Obama was able to sympathize with people of different circumstances because he exemplified a person with a diverse social location. Trump exploits other candidates’ religion while gloating his own in order to put himself ahead of the competition. He also attacks differing races, many Hispanics, in order to gain support from certain opposing populations. Lastly Trump uses his economic class as a way to endorse his qualifications to the American people for becoming president.
