The Sniper Theme Essay

The theme of ¨The Sniper¨ is that war reduces human beings to mere objects. To futher explain it is that they have no bnames, no face. That they are just targets and nothing more, to be shot at from a distance.

The theme of ¨Cranes¨ is that no war, not even civil war can overcome friendship.

The two stories ¨The Sniper¨ and ¨Cranes¨ have many differences and many similarites related to theme. ¨The Sniper¨ is a short story about a sniper who is fighting in the civil war in Ireland. Simiraly, the main character in ¨Cranes¨ is also living during a time of civil war in Korea. By the end of each story the themes appear different, but both share the same conflict that shapes and revolves around the two stories.

In ¨The Sniper¨ the main characters (the sniper) situiation is that he has to kill an enemy sniper. In the story we are told that his objective to kill the enemy sniper. His conflicts include decideing to kill an lady he suspected to an informer, getting shot in the arm by the enemy sniper and struggling to kill the enemy. He resolves these conflicts by killing the informer and enemy sniper. By the end of the story the sniper learns that his brother was the person he's been trying to kill throughout the entire story. The suprise ending revealed that the theme of this story is that in war, every and anybody can be labeled as an enemy.

The situation he is facing is the civil war in his country, Korea. His main confclict is he struggle to kill his enemies. He realized the person he captured while fighting in the war was his childhood friend Tokchea, who he had memories of chasing birds and picking on the trees with. He resolves this conflict by releasing his friend. The theme of the story is apperent, that friendship can make you do things that you would not have
