The ironic sentences, “The Republican sniper smiled and lifted his revolver above the edge of the parapet.”(3) and, “Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother's face.”(4), show him being happy about unknowingly killing his brother. Since he is so eager to do violence, he does not realize that hurting the other sniper, gives potential for him to get hurt. O’Flaherty uses the ironic sentences in his story to show how him being violent not only the person he hurt but also himself.
