The Sneetches was originally a book written by Dr. Seuss, to teach children the dangers of discrimination. Shortly after World War II, where the world had just witnessed the obliteration of Jews based on their religious preferences, Dr. Seuss also made “Sneetches” into a short documentary film. Sneetches was about two types of bird-like creatures, only separated by having stars on their bellies. The stars represented a difference between them and negatively affected the moral of the Sneetches without stars. Moreover, the Star-Belly Sneetches were considered high class and the plain belly Sneetches were considered low class. Nevertheless, adding insult to injury, the Star-Belly Sneetches went around bragging they are the best kind of Sneetches on the beaches, as a reminder to the Plain-Belly Sneetches of their being not equal and separate because they did not have stars on their bellies. In the same way I can remember a time when I was discriminated against for a job in Higher Education due to my age, which left me feeling depressed and oppressed like the Plain-Belly Sneetches.
