As part of our curriculum in Higher Education, a required course was Social Justice 6404. In this class the objective was to learn about different forms of social diversity to help prepare students for educating them on the issues of racism, discrimination, and injustice. One of the resource materials were films dealing with different class systems as teaching models. The first film viewed was “Sneetches” which gave me a better understanding about stereotypes and how they impact individuals of the same race.
The Sneetches was originally a book written by Dr. Seuss, to teach children the dangers of discrimination. Shortly after World War II, where the world had just witnessed the obliteration of Jews based on their religious preferences, Dr. Seuss also made “Sneetches” into a short documentary film. Sneetches was about two types of bird-like creatures, only separated by having stars on their bellies. The stars represented a difference between them and negatively affected the moral of the Sneetches without stars. Moreover, the Star-Belly Sneetches were considered high class and the plain belly Sneetches were considered low class. Nevertheless, adding insult to injury, the Star-Belly Sneetches went around bragging they are the best kind of Sneetches on the beaches, as a reminder to the Plain-Belly Sneetches of their being not equal and separate because they did not have stars on their bellies. In the same way I can remember a time when I was discriminated against for a job in Higher Education due to my age, which left me feeling depressed and oppressed like the Plain-Belly Sneetches. In conclusion, this film helps to remind me of the importance of this course, Social Justice in Higher Education, because it brings an understanding of how to respond to cultural

The plain-bellied Sneetches were not free to have picnics at the beaches, because they were not allowed to attend the star-bellied Sneetches party’s. The star-bellied Sneetches felt that they were supreme to the plan bellied, and would not allow plain bellied Sneetches to be invited to any of their activities. Seuss' lesson about discrimination can be used for adulthood situations as well as the childhood situations. For example, when someone walks into their first day of work ever somewhere; they tend to feel out of place and sometimes the coworkers separate the “New Hires” and blame mistakes made on them. I know this first hand, since at all of my jobs, I’ve had my fair share of new hire experience. For instance, for the first month I worked at T.J. Maxx everyone there had seemed to be targeting me; they seemed to be targeting me for everything that I made a mistake on. I would catch people saying things like, “It was that new hire.”…

This is evident since the era of colonization where powerful states invaded less powerful ones and subjected them to their authoritarian rule. Quite significantly, the effects of race and ethnicity are still present even in the contemporary society. Though not demonstrated out in the open, discrimination due to race or ethnic background still exists. In order to capture the true picture of how people of color face continued discrimination and prejudice in society, the two movies, Higher Learning and Coach Carter enjoy credits for demonstrating the true nature of the modern society.…

The movie Remember the Titans is an excellent example for sociological theories. Many topics can be observed within this movie, but two of the most prominent topics that we covered this semester are social structure, more specifically race and prejudices, and group processes, focusing on status construction. This movie takes place in a small town in North Carolina that has to deal with the shifting racial makeup of their football team, therefore high school, and therefore community. There is a lot of conflict not only between the different racial groups, but also within racial groups when people have different opinions of what is acceptable. The combination of the two racial groups leads to interesting observations of racial opinions and group…

Dr. Robin DiAngelo writes this in the Huffington post, “It became clear over time that white people have extremely low thresholds for enduring any discomfort associated with challenges to our racial worldviews.” She sees that whites often lack the ability to see the realities of racial slurs and so they simply shut down when the subject arises or ignore it entirely. Both of these intellects writing two decades apart want the awareness of the reality of racism to shine through, but although Dr. West suggests a solution it is not a successful reframing as DiAngelo has tried. This reframing that Dr. West discusses is also practiced by Jane Elliott in A Class Divided. In A Class Divided, Jane Elliott goes to her classroom of third graders, separates them by eye color, and tells them that one eye color is better than the other.…

Discrimination is a prevalent issue in society that has decreased over time, but is still occurring. It can be found in more subtle ways than in the past when Whites had their own water fountain to drink out of and Blacks were forced to sit in the back of the bus. The movie, Crash, depicts the prejudice that is present in modern day society. The characters show how people of different races and social classes interact with one another.
