The Slut Walk formed a two-part event holding a march and a public assembly bringing light to the objectification of women. The marching portion of the Slut Walk event was a walk around the campus to promote the issue that is sexual harassment, consent, and “slut” shaming. The public assembly held at the UNLV Amphitheater shed light on issues regarding sexual harassment, sexual abuse, women resources, and sex education. The two-part event touched on issues discussed in the readings, The Cult of Virginity (Shaw 334) and Betrayed by the Angel (Shaw 571). The event held an “open- mic” concept allowing anyone attending to speak on the issues the event revolved around. One audience member spoke about being in an abusive relationship and allowed it to continue because she thought she would be at fault if she left, just as the author in Betrayed by the Angel experienced. Multiple speakers spoke on the negative backlash people receive when they have sex for the first time as examined in The Cult of Virginity. Women studies informs and teaches issues that the community is directly affected by and events such as the Slut Walk are efforts to improve issues of sexual assault, consent, women shaming, and sex education. The event allowed people to speak on issues they felt important for others attending the event to listen. Multiple speakers told their personal stories over sexual harassment.
