Even though it was morally wrong, the labor many slaves would do for their owners helped economically. Their owners’ slaves could do jobs for free versus hiring someone to do it for them, and they would reap in the benefits of their labor. But what they failed to mention was that the slaves had to do exactly as told or they would be “Sold down the river” meaning their families would be sold off to other states or places in the South and in most cases never see each other again. There were slaves being raped by their owners, such as Thomas Jefferson, who later freed his unclaimed children, and worked extensive hours in the heat. Although slave owners wanted to make it seem that they were working in the beautiful outdoors with fresh air, versus the women working in the hot strenuous mills. There began concern for the health of the women. The air in the factories they were breathing wasn’t good for their wellbeing, and injuries were occurring, making it strenuous for these women to work in these conditions. Their employers at a point were also showing their true colors to them in the aspect of them only caring about the revenue, not their employees. Which eventually led to the women feeling like they too were going to work like slaves in a factory. The difference being though, that when they felt work was too much they were free to go back home as they wanted and someone else would take their position. While on the other hand, a slave could never make the decision for themselves as to what field of work they would be doing for the day. They were given orders and had to comply or fear repercussions from their owners. (Doc B- Doc C) Although wrong, slave owners justified slavery because it has existed in almost every era. The Chinese, Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians all had slavery and has existed through the world. Amongst this was also included that it would help economy, history, and religion. The people for slavery defended it by stating that the cotton production would collapse as well as tobacco crops without slaves to move the productivity
