Jim Crow laws were used to racially desegregate former slaves from white society. This form of discrimination lasted from 1876 to 1965; almost a decade of oppression. Blacks were use to using their hands for the profit of other, so being paid for the same work you were used to doing seemed right. Sharecropping was thought of as the only job that fit blacks. The process of sharecropping involved a landowner giving a portion of land, supplies, and a shack to a tenant; for the tenant to work and live on the land. At the of a time period, usually a month the tenant owes the landowner a percentage of the expected money that should be made of the crops. This made African Americans get deeper and deeper into depth as time increased. Putting African Americans into an uncompromising situation; where many had to flee to cities like Chicago for work, and better living opportunities.
