John Brown was an abolitionist that wanted to abolish slavery no matter what. John Brown in 1859 decided that he would attack slavery from the south. Brown found 21 individuals including five free African Americans “…in hope of fomenting a slave insurrection.” On the night of October 16,1859, Brown and his followers took over a federal armory at Harpers Ferry in Virginia. The problem with Brown’s plan was is that he never gave a word to the slaves to give weapons to and help him and also there was not that many slaves around to help since he thought there was a lot who would. Soon he got surrounded and captured with his followers and hanged on the charge of treason. John Brown raid was a significant reason that led to the Civil War because it made it even harder to unite the nation once again. When Brown was hanged the north were very saddened by it and endorsed Brown on what he tried to do. This took southerners by surprise that for Brown’s violent acts of trying to free slaves was endorsed by northerners. It showed to the southerners that the north, especially abolitionists, are willing to do anything even use violence to try and abolish slavery everywhere in the U.S. The raid made it harder for southerners to compromise because they would think that the northerners would not be trusted to not make another violent act that would be endorsed by people, they would want trust that they would follow the compromise to be united. The John Brown raid was not a step to the right direction to a united nation because it advocated violent acts to solve an issue that was dividing the people.
