The trafficking of negroes at that time became an often activity for certain people, that a license to a Fleming was granted by Charles V. Before being sold they were kept in pens and put up for auction. In order to control the slaves, the owners created fear in them by beating and whipping them on a regular basis. They were told the only valued they had was monetary. Slaves also depended on their owners in order to survive, so that is another way they were controlled. Because, if they ran away they had no place to go, no money, no food, no shelter and no possessions. Slaves were also not protected by law nor had a saying nor rights. There was not much to a slave 's life than to work for whoever bought them and live day by day. However, not many slaves stay still. Some to not say most rebelled and got beat up more and more and even killed. They would also runaway even though they had nothing in the end.
