The dolphin are being slaughter in a place called Taiji, Japan. Taiji is a small town with a big secret. If you didn’t look closely, you would think they love dolphins and whales (“The Cove”). The capture of dolphins and of the killing of dolphins all started when the show called “Flipper” came out in 1964. Ric O’Barry was the main trainer for training the dolphins. The fishermen tell you that this is our tradition, this is our culture you don’t understand us. You eat cows. Well we eat dolphins. Well that’s a lie, because the Japanese people don’t even know about it. The people don’t even know about it because of media cover-up, the government doesn’t want to let the people know that they are eating poison (“The Cove”). “Dolphin meat contains 2,000 ppm (parts per million) of mercury in it. The recommendation of total levels of mercury in seafood in Japan is 0.4 ppm,” Tetsuya Endo, Ph. D. at Health Sciences at the University of Hokkaido told us. It is very, very, very, highly toxic. People don’t realize that Mercury is the most toxic, non- radioactive element on Earth. All the meat of those 23,000 dolphins goes to the fish market to be sold. But dolphin meat is not the greatest meat to get. So they label them as very great whale meat from the southern hemisphere. The fishermen don’t even realize they are poisoning themselves, and not realizing they are poisoning themselves, they are poisoning the other people that are selling and buying it too. Mercury poison was discovered when a small town in Minamata, Japan broke out with an epidemic of Minamata disease. It’s not really a disease, but out a toxicity level. It mostly happens in the fetus when a women is pregnant where children were being born deformed. It can also damage your brain, and can slowly kill you, if you keep eating it. But the Japanese are on supply and demand like any other product on the market. And if the Japan community finds out about them selling poison they can’t sell it in Taiji, Iwate, Okinawa, or wherever they are selling it. So if we stop and focus on the one lagoon in Taiji, maybe could to shut it down. (“The

In Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s film, Blackfish (2013), Cowperthwaite captures the psychological torture killer whales, specifically Tilikum and Kasatka, face at Sea World after being brutally separated from their families. The film takes us through the journey of captured killer whales becoming mentally unstable and being used for entertainment purposes. This film displays archival footage and interviews with former trainers who had close experiences with killer whales at Sea World. The attacks at Sea World stem from the whales’ separation from their families, the trainer’s demand for the whales to do tricks in solitary confinement, and the punishment done to the whales when their tricks are not properly executed. All major accounts of killer whale attacks on trainers develop through the distress of the whales outside of their natural habitat.…

Throughout the documentary Blackfish, which debuted in 2013, director Gabriela Cowperthwaite argues that SeaWorld keeping killer whales in captivity is not only inhumane and dangerous for the whales themselves, but also dangerous to humans that train them and interact with them on a daily basis. The documentary starts off with a very famous phone call to the Orange County sheriff saying that the Senior trainer for SeaWorld, Dawn Brancheau, had been eaten by a Killer Whale; her arm was completely ripped off her body and swallowed by the whale. A few moments later groups and families of killer whales are shown in the ocean as peaceful and majestic animals. This indirectly gives the impression that killer whales are peaceful animals when not confined to captivity.…
