Many interesting facts were brought up in the short video “The Skinny on Obesity.” The first was that many people believe that eating low fat foods or reduced calorie foods would help them lose weight. This is incorrect because the fat or calories that are now missing must have been replaced with something else. For example, the film mentioned how Snackwells have a regular sandwich cookie and a low fat sandwich cookie. Both have the same amount of calories though; therefore that fat that has been reduced must have been replaced. The replacements are oils and sugars which actually leads to blood sugar swings and craving making it more difficult to control overall calorie intake. I never knew this before but it made me think that there could be a way to change this. I always knew that diabetes was sometimes a result of obesity, so why should the treatment make the situation worse. When a diabetic person doesn’t take insulin their blood glucose level is high. You become dehydrated and your body works to clear the excess blood glucose. This loss is only water weight though. When the diabetic properly takes insulin, insulin is now circulating your blood to get into cells where it can be used as energy rather than spending time in the blood stream and being excreted as urine. Therefore, the diabetic “gains weight”. The treatment doesn’t necessarily make the diabetic gain weight, it means the diabetic has to make adjustments because he or she has to balance eating enough so there isn’t a low blood glucose reaction but not as much as he or she has been eating to offset the high blood glucose

I agree with Pollan’s claims because cultural eating is healthier than following the advice of experts. I also agree on his claims that these experts are giving confusing and contradictory dietary advice.…

This is because the human brain and body do not thrive on starch, as the food pyramid diet infers, but rather the human brain is largely comprised of fat. In fact, 60% of the brain’s dry weight is fat. Therefore, low-fat diets have not only been disastrous for our waistlines, but also for our brains.…
