How to Hang a Witch by Adriana Mather relates to my own life. In this book the main character, Samantha Mather, overcomes many difficult and tragic situations. Samantha’s father is in a coma for the majority of the book and it is her responsibility to sort out long lost family troubles in a new town with new people to save his life. This particular situation relates to me because I spent this past summer working with other family members to care for my grandmother who was critically sick and in the hospital at various times.…
If I had a choice to spend an evening with a character from a book I have read, it would be Allyssa Velasco, from ‘Allie, First at Last’. I have so many reasons to choose Allie to spend an evening with. After reading the book, I realized that Allie and I had a lot in common. While reading, I shared a lot of similar feelings with Allie. Allie is the only one in her Mexican-American family who hasn’t own an award, trophy, or ribbon for her family award shelf.…
. William Jennings Bryan was a three-time candidate for president in the years 1896, 1900 and 1908. He was also a Democratic and Populist leader (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica 1). In the play, Inherit the Wind Matthew Harrison Brady is the fictional character of William Jennings Bryan in the book and they both share these traits religious, confidence, and the will to never give up. Brady and Bryan were to connect to the people of Dayton through religion.…
Despite retiring from public life, the Grimké sisters continued to promote religious, educational, economic, and political equality for African Americans and women. However, the nature and intensity of their participation in the antislavery and women’s rights movements had dramatically changed after 1838. Consequently, neither Angelina, who was in ill health, nor Sarah occupied roles of active leadership within the movements. In May of 1838, Angelina married Theodore Weld, a radical abolitionist who was an ardent admirer of the Grimké sisters’ antislavery work. Together, the Welds, with Sarah Grimké’s assistance, penned a powerful antislavery pamphlet in which they exposed the devastating horrors and barbarities of the American slavery system.…
Imagine having to go through a day and even every hour living like it would be you last, not knowing whether you will see your family another day or when you will be able to feel the sunlight on your skin again. This had been the brutal reality that Bella and Eliezer had face for years having survived the Holocaust. Having different experiences they both had memories that had been exiting and terrifying, Bella a fifteen year old a young teenager that had lived through heaving heard the sound of her people being massacred, walking an alley that had been flooded with blood of the innocent in hopes to find her family still alive and a child that had lived in a snake pit for fifteen months all in the sake for survival. But theses aren’t the memories…

However, not many have heard this familiar story from the wicked stepmother’s perspective. Sara Maitland offers this opposing point of view in “The Wicked Stepmother’s Lament,” which significantly changes the meaning of the tale. Traditionally, Cinderella…
The last time she leaves behind a golden shoe on the staircase the Prince had covered with pitch. When the Prince brings the shoe around looking for his true bride, as only the woman whose foot fits into the slipper can be his true bride, the evil stepsisters both cut off a part of their foot in an attempt to fool the Prince and in the end neither sister was truly his bride. When passing birds, which had helped Cinderella with the tasks her stepmother had given her to prevent her from going to the ball and also presented her with the wardrobe each night she went to the ball, also informed the prince each time he passed with one of the step-sisters that they had a bloody foot in the slipper and each time he took them back. At last he asks the stepmother if she has any other daughter and she says no, but the father mentions Cinderella and even refers to her as “a little stunted kitchen-wench my late wife left behind her, but she cannot possibly be the bride.” The prince insists she try on the shoe, which fit of course.…

In this essay I'll be focussing on how the character Mary develops throughout the novel Witch Child by Celia Rees. This book is mainly set in Salem, America, in 1659-1660. Mary's personality doesn't change too much throughout the novel. She is forced to become more independent when her Grandmother dies, but she never shows any emotions when people leave her.…
Gender is a socially constructed component that shapes the society that’s around us. From an early age, children are taught what a little boy is and what a little girl is and how each should act. Gender Identity is the knowledge that one knows if they are male or female. From an early age, children know many differences between themselves and their peers, although it might not be as defined in a way of actual biological differences. Mainly children see gender differences based on what roles they are exposed to.…
In John Patrick Shanley’s play, the struggle for Sister Aloysius to prove—and for Sister James to believe—that Father Flynn molested Donald Muller serves as the central conflict. Father Flynn is progressive, hoping to reform the church which causes the more conservative Sister Aloysius to appear intolerant and suspicious of him simply for his radical ideas. This conflict addresses other concerns beyond abuse, such as that of the subjugation of gender in the Catholic church, which affects Sister Aloysius’s pursuit of justice and still resonates throughout contemporary pursuits of justice, as well. Shanley’s 2004 play convolutes Sisters Aloysius and James’s firm belief in the church’s patriarchal hierarchy by stymying them as they pursue justice…
Edna the maid is a vital character within the play "An Inspector Calls" that emphasises both the Birling's superiority and capitalism within the town of Brumly. " Yes Ma'am" and "Please Sir" highlight to the audience that Edna is of a lower class than the Birling's which illustrates her lowly status and at the same time the Birling's superiority. Edna has been incorporated into the play to illuminate to the audience of the Birling's capitalist actions and as a symbol of their wealth. Priestley has given Edna little dialogue to highlight to the audience that she is of a lower class and she is used within the play to make it clear to the audience how the upper class treat the lower class. This can be seen as ironic, as the Birling family seem…
I really am not a fan of people comparing me to others, but when I think of fictional characters that remind me of me, a few come to mind. When I think of my personality, I think of humor and a loving person who is hardworking. I really don't like being compared to people because I feel I am one-of-a-kind and don't believe anyone is like me. Despite when speaking of fictional characters who are most like me, I believe three come to mind these three characters represent me as a person in different ways. The three fictional characters that most represent my personality are Stitch from Lilo and Stitch for his hard working and outgoing personality, Roger for his wisdom and understanding, and Stewie for his intelligence and humor but also caring for his family.…
After meeting Leslie Kuhn,I may have had a central purpose with my life. Well, not Leslie A. Kuhn of MSU herself, but whenever I describe Lilian, their characters seem quite parallel. Not only is she the most brilliant lady I have ever met,but she also exhibits a compassionate heart. Sadly, people never recognize Lilian as the beautiful individual she is or what she has to offer. While the society describe her as ''challenged'',I came to recognize her as unexpected role model.…
