The Single Most Important Chemical Process Of Photosynthesis

Decent Essays
Photosynthesis is the process by which mostly plants and other organisms use sunlight to make food. It uses sunlight to turn carbon dioxide into sugars the cell can use for energy. The energy from photosynthesis comes from light. Light energy is converted to chemical energy by chlorophyll. There are two sets of reactions, light dependent and light independent. Photosynthesis does not just occur in plants only, it also occurs in many kinds of algae, protists, and bacteria in order to get food. Photosynthesis is the single most important chemical process on the earth. Almost all plants need sunlight in order to survive. Plants produce oxygen during photosynthesis and utilize carbon dioxide. All people and animals need oxygen in order to survive.

Plants change the sunlight's energy into chemical energy by the process of photosynthesis. Pigments in the plants called chlorophyll, absorb photons from the sun. Glucose is the main source nutrition in plants. Two reactions happen in the Photosynthesis that are the light reactions, also known as light dependent reactions, and dark reactions, also known as light independent reactions. The dark reactions are sometimes called the Calvin cycle, C3 Cycle, or Carbon Fixation.…

This process is carried out in chlorophyll, a green pigment present in plants, some bacteria and some prostists4. Photosynthesis occurs in two stages, a light-dependent process (light reactions) and a light-independent process (dark reactions). During the light reactions, electrons in chlorophyll a are excited to a higher energy state by sunlight. The energy from the sunlight is converted to ATP and NADH, water is split releasing oxygen as a by-product and the ATP and NADH are used during the dark reaction to make C-C bonds4. During the light-dependent process, an important metabolic pathway occurs known as photophosphorylation occurs whereby energy is converted from a light-excited electron into the pyrophosphate bond of an ADP molecule4.…

The role of carbon dioxide in photosynthesis is that it is used by plants to create glucose and water which is what is used as food for the plant and in turn creates oxygen. After the oxygen is formed carbon dioxide is created from this oxygen and the result is water after attaching itself to hydrogen molecules to create released oxygen which allows humans and other living creatures that need oxygen, to live. This is also…

In light dependent reactions, the products have a key role in the drive of the reactions in the Calvin Cycle. The overall product of the Calvin Cycle includes glucose. The products of the reactions are vital to photosynthesis due to the reason being that to generate chemical energy, light energy is essential. With this being done, the free energy is then stored in as glucose. The cycle uses the energy from the excited carriers to covert water and carbon dioxide into organic compounds.…

Light Intensity and the Rate of Photosynthesis By: Maxwell Wissman, Lela Cohen, Sophia Stevenson and Russell Leibovitz ABSTRACT: This experiment was done to answer and/or to find out if you change the light intensity on a healthy plant, then it will photosynthesize differently, because the photons will hit the leaves of the plant more or less, thus increasing or decreasing the photosynthetic rate. This would answer the question by seeing how many bubbles come up without any light and how many bubbles does with light at different distances for different amounts of time (seconds). The goal is to solve the problem of how light affects the rate photosynthesis in the Elodea.…

Determining The Process of Photosynthesis And Cellular Respiration Using Elodea and Yeast Introduction Photosynthesis is an essential process to life on earth, in which plants and other organisms use sunlight to create food from oxygen, and carbon dioxide. Cellular respiration is when energy in food is released and converted to ATP, which is then used as chemical energy to complete tasks within a cell. This process usually requires oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. Photosynthesis and cellular respiration are similar in some areas and different in others. The purpose of both of the process is to produce energy, but they have different ways of achieving this goal.…

Introduction Photosynthesis is the process in which light energy is converted into chemical energy in plants and other organisms (Reece, 2011). Photosynthesis is a redox reaction where carbon dioxide is reduced to sugar (glucose) and water is oxidized to oxygen (Reece, 2011). The reaction that occurs during photosynthesis is shown through the empirical equation CO2 + H2O → (CH2O)N + O2 (Stegenga, 2015). Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts of plant cells, specifically within the thylakoid and the stroma (Stegenga, 2015).…

Photosynthesis is a plant’s mechanism of converting sunlight and CO2 into energy in the form of organic material (Hohmann-Marriott and Blankenship 2011). Plant respiration is the process of using energy and oxygen to produce CO2 (Gonzalez-Meler et al. 2004). Almost all plants reproduce and respire, therefore it is important to know what factors could affect the rate of photosynthesis and respiration to better understand how plants function. Some research has shown that elevated CO2 concentrations may determine plant productivity by affecting plant physiological processes, and ecosystem structure and functions such as photosynthesis ( Xu et al. 1987).…
