The Sinful Nature of Mankind Is it possible to avoid temptation and withstand faith? In “Young Goodman Brown”, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Faith is portrayed as a young and innocent wife. However, sin is inevitable. The human race carries a sinful condition, since the creation of Adam and Eve. Therefore, faith is the backbone of mankind. However, in some circumstances it is difficult to withstand faith and be carried away in temptation. Young Goodman Brown’s journey is the epitome of the journey of life. A journey in which people experience to withstand faith or give it up. In some circumstances, purity may be existent in one-self and in other circumstances doubt may conquer. In Young Goodman Brown Faith is an innocent wife. However, upon close inspection Faith’s characterization is a symbol of Goodman Brown’s principles and morals. Leaving his wife Faith meant leaving what he stands for. Suggesting when faith is abandoned insanity occurs. When Young Goodman Brown begins his journey, he thinks highly of his Faith. Brown makes an attempt to go back to his faith. Hawthorne portrayed his young and innocent wife Faith as Brown’s young and innocent Christian faith. This embodiment makes Young Brown realize that he has to withstand his principles. However, he fails to do this because of the sinful human nature. The story of Young Goodman Brown is relatable since it is in the nature of humans to recognize and hate evil. However, there are endless instances when humans practice evil and tempt others. The loss of innocence and the loss of faith is relatable in modern human experience. Young Goodman Brown’s journey is a journey of human nature. It is in the nature of individuals to sin and doubt their faith. Thus, evil is
