In The Simpsons, season 4 episode 1 (Kamp Krusty), Homer says; “Son, if you really want something in this life, you have to work for it. Now quiet, they’re about to announce the lottery numbers!” The quote means that everybody needs to work for their achievements, but enjoy life to the fullest as well. Nowadays, kids are having everything given to them and they do not work for it. Many kid owns the newest Iphone or the latest gadget. If kids work for what they want, it would prepare kids for when they get older, and have to work for things they desire and need. One of my proudest achievements consist of my blue belt in Judo. The belts sequence through white, yellow, orange, green, and, finally, to blue. I attended Judo twice a week for four

Character Literary Essay (´´The Marble Champ´´) Stop doubting yourself, work hard and make it happen. I think this quote shows something of Lupe´s philosophy. In the story ´´The Marble Champ,´´ by Gary Soto, Lupe, the protagonist, is a shy girl and is not good at sports but is a straight -A- student. The story shows that she is a very hard worker because she sacrifices her own time to practice, tries her best, and she is determined to be good at sports.…

When reading about president Coolidge’s life, there was one particular detail and recurring theme that I empathized with: Coolidge’s dedication to the public and his selflessness in pursuing his dreams. Coolidge made it a priority of his to chase after his goals not for vanity, but to improve himself in his capacity to serve others. He was a man who improved himself to serve the public, not a man who simply ruled the public to serve himself. One especially poignant example of this struck me on page 87 of his autobiography, where Coolidge explains how “I knew the City Solicitor was to retire and I wanted that place… but my whole thought was on my profession. I wanted to be city solicitor because I knew it would make me a better lawyer”.…

There’s a Chinese Proverb that says, “Failure is not falling down, but refusing to get back up again.” I really wish I heard that quote when I thought I was a failure, but really was just being lazy. In Carol Dweck’s article “Brainology” a study is conducted on seventh grade students and their mindsets. Their mindsets were measured and studied for two years. Dweck studied the difference between the fixed mindset and the growth mindset students and how they did in school.…

During the Post World War II-time era America had the assumption that their society was the best, that assumption in more recent years of 1995 has changed into that America can do better. In the passage “Entitlement” from Robert Samuelson’s 1995 book The Good Life and Its Discontents Samuelson talks about a “paradox of our time” (Samuelson 1995). That paradox is entitlement, in 1995 America had adopted a different assumption on society creating the paradox of the American society which is feeling bad when doing good. In the passage Samuelson accurately explains the shifts in views, from the early century to the more recent years of 1995, of the American society and how they have evolved from the past to the present.…

Disability may only be a matter of judgement. This concept appears in Homer and Langley, where Edgar Lawrence Doctorow depicts the possibilities in the life of a blind protagonist, Homer Collyer. Although Homer discerns darkness in a negative connotation, darkness can only be seen and sight is not the only sense for humans. Thus, blindness does not replace the senses or disconnect the Collyer brothers from the world. In a passage on page 159, Langley Collyer’s theory of replacement enables Homer to explore the advantages of his disability which include interacting with the world in a different perspective to maintain his valuable memories, developing positive views about his disability and adapting to other senses.…

“People are going to label you. It’s how you overcome those labels, that's what matters.” That is a quote from what is personally my favorite show ever, One Tree Hill. It shows how you can change what people think of you, and to be yourself in all circumstances. One Tree Hill was recently taken off Netflix, and there isn't really a reason, but it needs to be put back on because so many people watch it, many love it, and it is a life lesson filled, relatable show.…

However, after many years of seeing participation awards, many people are rethinking the benefits. For example, a sixth grader form New Jersey has many trophies, but admitted “I’m not actually so good at sports.” Some people may feel that it builds a child’s self-esteem if everyone gets an award, but kids know they are getting the award because everybody is getting one. Some people also express in the article “Should Everyone get a Prize” that a trophy is one way to encourage a child's efforts. However, the article “Losing Is Good For You” explains that in order to improve a child's self-image it is helpful to develop their abilities as an athlete.…

Now after we saw Weeds point, we can understand better that in today’s economy in the US it will be very difficult for every hard-working person to find a good job that pays a good salary. However, King states, “… we should rely on values of the American Dream: that anybody can climb out of hardship and achieve success” (615), in other words, King suggests that anyone can achieve success if they work hard, and this is the value of the American Dream. Weeds showed us that this statement is simply wrong because people can’t really achieve success if they work hard, as the two Americans in Weeds claimed, if people work hard it doesn’t promise they will achieve success. Years ago, King could be right, people could achieve success if they worked…
