Successful Writing Tutor

Believe it or not, going on a first date and being a writing tutor have many similarities. There is a wide scope of tasks men should accomplish if they want their first date to be a successful one. Men should do certain little things before, during, and at the end of each first date that could potentially contribute to their overall success. A successful writing tutor shares many of the same qualities as a man who plans a memorable first date. The list goes on and on but creating a confident image, asking meaningful questions, complimenting specifically and appropriately, and leaving a positive image of yourself in hopes of a second encounter are all qualities that both a charming man and a great writing tutor possess.

It would not be acceptable to tell your date “you look smokin’ hot,” as she gets into your car. While I’m sure the lovely lady entering the vehicle looked fantastic, it would surely make her feel at least slightly uncomfortable. Instead, an appropriate and specific compliment such as, “Your hair looks really pretty tonight. Did you get it done anywhere special?” would likely bedazzle most women. However, there is no formula to giving a successful compliment and reactions will vary from girl to girl The second compliment is far more likely to generate a positive response, as it is more meaningful, specific, and appropriate. As a writing tutor, it is important to praise specifically. According to my mentor, Azeem Khan, if a compliment is too general, it may be hard for the writer to know your compliments are genuine even if they truly are. Telling a writer these are “great ideas” or this is “wonderful information” may seem like great things to say. However, this information is too vague and may ultimately confuse the writer because it may be difficult for them to pinpoint what, “exactly, about the information is wonderful” (Khan). A more appropriate compliment to give to a writer would be, “I noticed you transitioned all of your paragraphs very well, which is wonderful”. When a tutor points out good writing, it will make it easier for the student to repeat in the future. Azeem once told …show more content…
If a tutor and tutee are having great conversation in the Writing Center, the tutor can specifically focus where a student needs the most help. Great questions will allow the tutee to see exactly what is necessary to improve his or her writing. There are many more qualities that a charming man and a writing tutor share, but appearing confident, asking great questions, giving meaningful and specific compliments, and leaving a positive image are a few of the most important. It seems any ladies man would effortlessly fly through a tutorial because he is already accustomed to some of the most essential skills required to be a writing tutor. And on the other hand, any great writing tutor should be able to secure a second date with

According to Boyles (2004), “teachers talk with students to monitor their progress as well as to set goals and help them solve problems” (p.75). Teachers should conduct writing conferences in order to assess and evaluate the writing progress of their students. The purpose of writing conferences is finding the strengths and weaknesses of their writing to improve and develop the skills the student already has. Depending on the students writing the teacher facilitates interventions to improve the students writing skills. Teachers should frequently plan writing conferences to check-in on their students and the progress they have made.…

Ms. Dirmeyer, my 7th grade Language Arts teacher, still keeps in touch with me, even though she’s not my teacher anymore. She takes interest in my writing, and has done several things to help me improve. Ms. Dirmeyer sends me emails with writing tips, along with worksheets directed towards improving my writing.…

Writing is incredibly important for any student in college because it's the basis of your work. Therefore having a writing tutor is a huge privilege. The expectations I have about going to a writing tutor is that he or she will help me come up with ideas for my writing assignments, as well as for the drafting and revising aspects of it. He or she will also find flaws in my writing assignments and give me input in order to become a better writer. I envision my writing session as me sitting with my writing tutor going over the instructions for a writing assignment if I have not started yet, or revising my paper if I'm close to finishing it.…

I label myself as not being a writer but someday it’s going to be my duty to teach others to be.…

Really, the only kind of writing I do outside of school is text my friends. It’s been a pretty long time since i’ve written a story or something outside of school. The reason for that is because I don’t like to write without a specific subject. To be honest, I’m ok with writing, as long as it has some sort of a subject. I absolutely despise having to write some random story that doesn’t have any control, it’s just not fun.…

“Diving In: An Introduction to Basic Writing” by Mina Shaughnessy In this article, Shaughnessy argues that educators need to start examining their own teaching and learning processes and the complex and contextual needs of their students, instead of focusing on what students can be doing differently. She points out that basic writing students are not behind and need to “catch up” to any particular level, but there must been a more effective means of communication needs to be established between the students and teachers (291). Shaughnessy presents four stages of development as a basic writer instructor and explains how educators move through these stages before becoming competent to teach basic writing. The first stage called “Guarding the…

Describe Yourself As A Writer I’ve come to realize that after years of writing papers, I’m actually a better writer than I give myself credit for. I’ve noticed over time that I’ve advanced in how I structure my paragraphs, however, not so much with my sentences. It’s like making a cake look delicious at first glance with frosting and decorations, but then you take a bite and there 's way too much sugar or it 's overcooked in the inside. My strength in writing includes: using better words to describe what I’m writing about, spelling complex words, creativity, and passion.…

I took my Smart Measure, 2-1 Success Plan Activity assessment on January 4 and was shocked by my results. I scored 100s and high 90s in almost everything (Individual Attributes, Learning Styles, Technical Competency, Technical Knowledge, Math and Typing Speed) were among the higher percentage predominately in the Blue coded (100%). What shocked me was my Reading, Writing and Recall scores which fell way below my personal expectations at 79% (88% in Apprehension, 80% in Grammar, Usage and Syntax and 60% in Structure). As a student planning to minor in Creative Writing I cringed when I saw these terrible results in what I believed were my strengths not weaknesses! I immediately began to search the SNHU Resources in MySNHU for tutoring and online writing resources that would help me strengthen these skills and make me a better writer in my professional and academic career.…

Overall, a good writing consultant should be able to understand that everyone learns differently. This is a concept that is stressed a lot in education classes and one that I have personally grown very fond of. I understand that for some people writing comes easily, but for others a simple essay can be a stressful struggle. Consultants don’t just need to have strong writing skills, but also the ability to step out of their own box and accommodate to the consultee’s specific needs. This is an education model that will be not only be emphasized while I work, but also as a part of my day to day…
