The characters in The Odyssey and “Scarlet Ibis” follow the same idea of having hubris and selfishness. The older brother and Odysseus differ by Brother wanting Doodle to fit in at school but Odysseus wants to stand out and be better than everybody else.

Odysseus is on a journey to get home after fighting the Trojan War and has to face many challenges along the way. These situations involve monsters and fictional characters. The story of The Odyssey is unrealistic. In “Scarlet Ibis”, Doodle and Brother are part of a regular family in the “normal” world. Doodle is born with the inability to walk or do movements that most people can do and Brother is not okay with that. Brother is determined to teach Doodle to walk so that he is “normal” and fits in with the other kids. The main similarity between the two characters is that hubris is their monster but the difference is the ways it impacts them and the ways they use it. Odysseus has hubris by wanting to stand out and be better than everybody else. Odysseus has to make sure that the whole world knows that he is responsible for the blinding of the Cyclops and that he is the genius who creates the plans for him and his crew.
