The Similarities Between Childhood Goals And Adulthood

Decent Essays
Though some of the goals we have in childhood relate to the goal we have in adulthood, as a whole, they differ greatly. For example, as children, we are very much about instant gratification. Our goals center soley around the here and now. As children or teenagers, we have short term goals, such as becoming captain of the football team, being voted homecoming queen, or saving enough allowance to buy the hot new jeans that just went on sale at the mall. In contrast in adulthood, our goals seem to have more meaning, and are primarily long term. For instance, as adults, our goals may be to graduate college, have a career, own a home and have a family. As adults, we are thinking more of the future, and not only of ourselves, but of our families.

It is a universal truth that children envy adults and adults envy children. What is ironic is they are both right. When transitioning from childhood to adulthood, a child has to leave his or her carefree world behind to take on the real world. There are many similarities between these two stages of life such as the continuous desire to learn and the necessity of friendship. The differences outweigh the similarities though, including the difficulties of aging, the burden of responsibilities, and the troubles of decision making.…
