Concrete operational stage --- ages seven to eleven
B. Formal operational stage --- ages eleven to sixteen
In Piaget’s outline, the affects of age on second language acquisition appear to occur at puberty which is between the ages eleven to sixteen. At this stage, a person becomes capable of abstraction which is formal thinking of concrete experience in life.
As first language acquisition, second language researchers assumed that second language acquisition has a critical time which is below puberty and children who want to succeed in learning a second language should start before this critical period of time. But some educators like John T. Bruer argued that “we always pay too much attention on when learning languages occur and too little attention on how learning might best occur” in his book The Myth of the First Three Years. (Chipongian 2000, P.1) These second language researchers suggest that “early start learning in a second language is neither a strict necessary nor a sufficient condition for the attainment of native-like proficiency”. (Chipongian 2000) They believe that timing is not everything. Studies have shown that there is almost five percent of adult bilinguals master a second language even though they are over the age of puberty. Researchers assume that the only aspect of language that has an effect following the critical period is accent. Second language learners who are above the puberty stage are unable to acquire a native-like accent. But we know second

Krashen(1981) mentioned the relationship between self-esteem and oral production in ESL performs. A person with higher self-esteem tends to achieve better than those because the person would not feel embarrass if they make mistakes. However, if teachers try to correct mistakes from those students with introvert personality, teachers need to properly correct them without embarrassing them in front of other peers. For example, if Mary says” I go to school with my sister yesterday,” the teacher would respond, "You went to the store with your sister yesterday?" She has effectively provided corrected input while also continuing the conversation. If a student shuts down after an outright correction then opportunity for more input and practice has been lost.
Risk-Taking:
Risk-taking is an important characteristic of successful in learning a second language. According to Brown(2002), “learners have to be able to gamble a bit, to be willing to try out hunches about the language and take the risk of being wrong.” (p.149) Risk-taking seems to be a closely connected to a self-esteem factor. For those who have extrovert personality students, their ability to learn a second language is much quicker than introvert students because they have a higher self-esteem.

In the ted talk “The linguistic genius of babies” by Patricia Kuhl (2010), she points that babies and children are genius language leaners because their brain is different. The topic starts with a graph, it shows people have a “critical period” of acquiring a second language until 7-year-old, then it turns decline gradually until age of puberty. She studied about how do babies find sounds of different language in the first “critical period”. She did two tests about babies under 1-year-old listening different language — American English, Japanese, and Mandarin. The results show that babies between 8 months to 12 have high sensibility on sounds of languages which they listened for some time, even a brand new language.…

While foreign language is a core academic requirement for high school graduation, secondary language classes at an earlier age would improve overall fluency for most students. (p. 90) It’s time to introduce second-language concepts to the youngest students. By incorporating a bilingual program it actually gives them a distinct academic advantage throughout life. The more that children can take advantage of new concepts, the more in tune their brains will be to all learning throughout life.…

During my previous spring semester, I enrolled myself in a Spanish class, where online homework was assigned. Before I began my homework, there was a video on the home page that caught my particular attention. Until then, I had no idea that languages could become endangered, or for that matter, go extinct all together. As I watched the video, I learned about a language in Mexico called Ayapaneco. Its sole native speakers are two elderly men in their seventies, but a fight has since left the two in silence for decades.…

Rhetorical Analysis: Positivity of Bilingual Education Bilingual education has positively affected foreign children with their overall lives. Kenneth Jost’s, Harvard College and Georgetown University Law Center alumni, article, “Bilingual Education vs. English Immersion” is about the positive significance of bilingual education in public schools. Jeff Bale’s, a language education professor at Michigan State University, article, “Bilingual Education is the Best Approach for English Language Learners” also explains why this type of education is effective for foreign students. Together, both of these authors provide an effective argument with the use of reasoning, credibility, and emotion, but also include logical fallacies. Jost’s and Bale’s…

Toddlers remember something that is repeated to them over and over. For instance, my cousin is a two year old who already knows both Spanish and English. Many people look amazed when they hear her speak both languages, but there is no secret. A child who is being taught Spanish will obtain and remember more of the language than a person who is being taught as an adult. An adult does not seem too gather as much information and remember the information like a toddler would.…

I am interested in learning how language is acquired for bilingual infants and if the preconceived notion of them being placed at a disadvantage is really true. I would like to examine the different advantages and disadvantages bilingual infants face while being exposed to 2 languages at a time. I would also like to see at what rate certain milestones are hit compared to monolingual infants. Additionally, I would like to see how bilingual infants are able to perform at specific tasks compared to their monolingual peers.…

Piaget believes that children vigorously obtain information and adapt it to their prior knowledge and notions about the world they know. Therefore, children create their comprehension of actuality from their individual experiences. Piaget separated intellectual development into four separate periods that investigative the changes in child’s cognitive make up. The first stage is Sensorimotor where a child develops coordination of their senses with motor response and occurs within the first two years of life. Between the ages of two through seven the Precoperational stage takes place and children develop symbolic thinking, how to accurately use syntax, and fully use grammar to communicate complete ideas.…

There are still some sectors of society that firmly, if mistakenly, believe that kids are too young to learn another language other than that spoken at home by their parents and siblings. The reasons usually given include the supposedly undue mental and physical stress that children must endure to learn a new language. Well, this could not be further from the truth where the why and how kids learn Spanish are concerned. Why Children Learn Faster Research has proven that children as young as three years old can learn a new language alongside their mother tongue. In fact, most children learn faster and easier than their adult counterparts when provided with similar language learning materials.…

In Patricia Kuhl's "Linguistic Genius of Babies," her research has found that babies have an amazing ability to learn other languages; however, she also stated that there is a critical period for language acquisition of a new language. According to Kuhl, the critical period of learning a new language is before seven, and anytime after that period, language acquisition is usually radically more complicated. Kuhl also mentioned that babies use “statistics” on the sounds they hear, and explained how she uses brain scans to examine the babies’ brains. Regarding Kuhl's critical period hypothesis, that there’s a fixed period of time in which adults can really learn a language and learn it well, in my humble and unscientific opinion, I think her…

It is more difficult to learn a language the older you become. According to the Universal Grammar Theory, language is so important, noun and verb categories are innate. It has been suggested that children are sensitive to patterns in language which enables acquisitions process (Lemetyinen). It has been proven that actual sound receptors are pruned during middle childhood. If a certain sound is not apparent in the language you learn at a young age, your brain prunes that specific neural pathway to speed up other functions.…

A good practise while learning a foreign language is the reflection. One has to think critically what are his/her own strengths and weaknesses in order to be able to improve and reach his/her objectives. The aim of this review is precisely this – I will expose the key factors of my English learning, then I will indicate the ways that I find most and less useful to learn a language, next I will list my strong points and my weak spots and finally I will give some ideas to ameliorate my command of English as a foreign language. I started studying English when I was six years old, which means I have been learning it for thirteen years. Until 2015, I studied it in two different environments: the school and a private academy.…

This course provided me with theories and explanations in how human acquired the first and second language and what factors can affect their ability to acquire the language. There are three theories that have been described first language acquisition. Behaviorist approach insists that language behavior is a production of correct response to a particular stimulus. Functional approach focused on the social interaction while the nativist theory insists that we are born with the inner ability to understand and developed language.…
