How can America be labeled “the land of the free” while colored people are still being targeting for the pigmentation of their skin? The documentary “13th”, produced by Ava DuVernay, discusses the history of slavery and segregation, the crisis of mass incarceration, and the criminalization of all communities of color. The brutality and violence enforced by whites upon innocent groups of colored individuals is multitudinous. I was shocked by the relevance of slavery in today’s society, a society in which equality is promoted. After watching “13th”, I possessed negative feelings, had more knowledge on the American prison system, and learned of the dramatic effects of the media on the minds of citizens.
The horrors discussed within the film evoked feelings of surprise and guilt. I was appalled by the number of innocent colored people who were being targeting for their race. I was completely shocked to discover how prominent of an issue the oppression of colored individuals still is in America today. The leaders of today need to confront the oppression instead of criminalizing anyone of a different pigmentation. The institution of slavery never truly ended because there would be no oppression, there would be no racism, there would only be a country representing true equality. People would rather ignore the subject because they are not being directly targeted.
