If I were to ask a random person about the presence of slavery in our generation, their response will more than likely be, “Slavery ended in the eighteenth century.” This concept is inaccurate as it still exists in other countries, Margie Mason, Robin McDowell, Martha Mendoza and Esther Htusan are the authors of the article “Global supermarkets selling shrimp peeled by slaves” published in 2015 created to spread awareness of human trafficking and slavery in factories that produce shrimp and bought by global supermarkets. Americans continue to buy their beloved shrimp without considering the workers who peeled the shrimp, and little do they know that the shrimp they buy could have been peeled by the tiny hands of children who are forced to work. As this country continues to buy shrimp from Thailand it only promotes more slavery in the country, and has resulted in nearly half of the supply exported from Thailand to be sent to the United States (Mason). A logos appeal was applied when the authors included the statistics about the factory and how they can keep fifty to a hundred people in each shed locked inside (Mason). These sheds have no air conditioning, no work area and the slaves are forced to complete their work for the day in a tight space. They work on a hard floor for endless hours or even days without proper breaks given. Their freedom will not be given back if Thailand continues to dominant the market, not only is slavery occurring the shrimp industry but in the authors words changed to ‘seafood industry’ as it keeps expanding. Technology plays a big factor because the page can be shared between other social media sites enlarging the amount of audience who reads it. The government in Thailand unfortunately is not a big help towards the matter of human trafficking and slavery because of their lack of reinforcement and officials. This article has a directed audience and it is the governments in other countries who have the resources and power to help Thailand improve their problems with slavery in the seafood industry. However, this article is meant to be read by anyone because reducing the demand for shrimp will require Thailand to fix the problem to begin exporting their supply to regain money for their
