Persepolis follows Marjane through her development and change from childhood to adulthood. The rebellion of Marjane’s family allows for them to uphold their values and remain connected through parties, celebration, and strength in unification against the Shah. Rebellion is also significant for character development of Marjane. The rebellious acts of Marjane allow her to break away from the authority, war, and ideals of her country to explore her independence and individuality which adds depth to her character. However, the rebellion results in the division of the family when Marjane is sent to boarding school in attempts to ensure her safety. The family is also negatively affected by rebellion when Uncle Anoosh is imprisoned and eventually executed for his subversive actions against the Revolution.
