The Oxford dictionary defined literature as “Familiarity with letters or books; knowledge acquired from reading or studying books, esp. the principal classical texts associated with humane learning; literary culture; learning, scholarship”. The definition of literature leads to understand the significance of reading literature. It is important to read literature because we can free our minds, have a better understanding of history, and to improve our communication skills. Through reading, we can identify between informal or formal grammar that give us hints about if people are educated or not. But not only that, it also helps us to understand what the writer wants to transmit. For that reason we need to expand our vocabulary and start building a more educated one. However, reading literature we learn additional vocabulary that help us to be better communicators either by writing or speaking. Reading is an excellent practice to learn how to communicate effectively with others. We need to communicate in our daily life, but if we learn new words we can handle conversation with people from different social class, education, and races. Expanding our vocabulary make us feel better and confident about ourselves with others, because we know how we want to others understand our points of view. I n particular, I have learn a lot in this class, especially vocabulary that help me to improve my word choice in my writing assignments. On the other hand, it can contribute to finding a better job and remuneration. In all jobs we have the necessity to communicate to express our thoughts or feeling. Literature can teach us how powerful language can be. A word can be meaningful depending on how we use it. This idea is a different approach of what people would think it is important to read literature. I believe this notion it what make us humans being, characterized for have feelings and be able to be in others person shoes. As we know sympathy is the common feeling and understanding of others condition even though is not our situation. In fact, Martha Nussbaum stated “we all born with this capacity in a rudimentary form, but if it is not trained it will remain crude and highly uneven”. Clearly sympathy is a nature capacity that human beings own, but it only can be form if we understand what sympathy is by practicing and learning from diverse resources.
