The reason is that, people who live in large cosmopolitan cities tend to react more normally to sex before marriage. Moreover, in a large city the chances that others would hear about one woman’s premarital sex would be minimal because as the name calls, big cities are home to millions of people. Even if one’s actions were known in such a cosmopolitan city as New York, honour killings are not a common way of dealing with any possible family disgrace, and if the brothers’ intentions had been openly expressed, somebody would probably have done something to stop the murder from happening.
To sum up, the plot development in literary works is highly dependent on the setting. Chronicle of a Death Foretold is a good example to this. If the novel had taken place in a modern city at the present time, the plot would have to be altered resulting in a completely different work of literature.
