“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young but set an example for believers in speech, conducted, love, faith, and in purity.” 1st Timothy 4:12. Matthew, the main character in the captivating book The Sigh of the Beaver, needed this verse to comfort him because he must prove to his family and himself that even though he was twelve he could take on a challenge. Matt and his father toiled for weeks on end to build a durable cabin in the wilderness of Maine. But once most of the cabin’s outside and inside was completed a dilemma arouse. Matt’s mother, sister, and new baby sibling still resided in their old home in Massachusetts. So Matt’s father must make the long journey to guide the rest of the family to Maine and leave Matt to watch over the cabin for seven lengthy weeks. Everyone agrees that Matt’s dad left him at age twelve. Some people believe Matt’s dad should have left him at age twelve. Some people think Matt’s dad should not have left Matt at twelve. Matt’s father should have left Matt in the wild wilderness of Main at twelve. This benefited the cabin. Matt built character. Matt was able to learn environment.

The thought that crossed Matt’s mind when he saw Attean did respect him is “After all the brave deeds he had dreamed of to win this boy’s respect, he had gained it at last by doing nothing, just by staying here and refusing to leave”(115). So sometimes the key of wining someone’s respect is not doing great acts, having fancy clothes, or being smart.
