Red Brick Road Research Paper

Unstable, red, bumpy brick roads causing student bikers and drivers daily mayhem as they can feel every pot hole and dip in the street. Not to mention the horrendous condition of the sidewalks as well. The students of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln already have enough stress put on them to excel in classes, they should be given beautiful, safe, pot hole free sidewalks and streets to enjoy. One would think with the amount of tuition the students pay here, the university could at least provide decent travel paths. “It is time for a change”. (University of Nebraska student) Over the past couple weeks, I have conducted research and asked multiple sources about their thoughts on the sidewalk and street conditions we have here at the University of …show more content…
The red brick road leading up to Memorial Stadium was built in the early 1900s and since then has done nothing but erode, causing huge pot holes and cracks on both sides of the street. When I went for an analytical walk to investigate in detail the condition of not only the red brick roads, but also the sidewalks around the village and Abel/Sandoz residence halls, I discovered many problems lurking in the cement. First, concerning the red brick road, I noticed places all …show more content…
Before the interview, I was completing unaware of his situation when I asked him his opinion on the university’s sidewalks. “I cannot stand how beat up the sidewalks are here. I just started long boarding a little over a month ago before one of the huge cracks on the sidewalk right outside Abel residence hall shattered the wood holding my wheel into place, leaving me doing summersaults on the concrete.” When the interview was finished, I felt bad for the student because he had just spent $150 on a new longboard that because of the sidewalk condition, left him slowly walking like most students on

The lack of improvements and renovations made to Blanco Hall has flourished into a major problem for it’s Texas State University student residents. As a current student at Texas State University who resides in Blanco Residence Hall, I have personally experienced the absence of undertaken measures in regards to the issue of my residence hall’s condition. I propose that the Director of Housing at Texas State University shows empathy towards Blanco Hall residents, eradicates the idea that residence halls built decades ago should remain in the same conditions, and schedules a fumigation of the mold at Blanco Hall due to her being knowledgeable of the effects that college students living environments can have on them. The Director of Housing at…

A few weeks ago, on my way up Mund’s Park in Flagstaff for a camping trip, my dad stopped inside the Northern Arizona University (NAU) campus. We were meeting my dad’s old friend Milo, along with two of my friends, Julia and Sharon. It was around lunch time, so we all went ahead and ate. While devouring our Mexican food, my friends and I asked Milo a few questions about NAU. He works as a network engineer at NAU.…

The Yellow Brick Road is the path that leads to Emerald City, the heart of Oz. This represented the financial golden standard that led the way to the political and financial center of Oz. The reason why I think the Yellow Brick Road was yellow is because yellow is a bright colour, which is most likely why it led to Emerald City, because it is also a very bright and beautiful city. The definition of gold standard is the best, most reliable, or most prestigious thing of its type. This makes sense because the Yellow Brick Road was the best and most reliable path to get to Emerald City, and was one of the most prestigious things in the Land of Oz.…

The main road everyone in the world drives on is Route 66. Route 66 relates to leadership because it is running about 2,400 miles through Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, and California. The legacy behind Route 66 is that train engines were limited in the terrain they could cross, railroad routes were painstakingly chosen, so they built the route 66 for another option other than taking a train. The cause of Route 66 is because Cyrus Avery links Chicago, Illinois and Los Angeles, California through his town Tulsa. Cyrus became interested in roads after he visited his father’s farm.…

“The streets are paved in sunshine.” This was the first statement I heard upon arriving at Stanford University. The woman who said those six words that caught me completely off guard approached me with a California-aged smile, casual and relaxed, and welcomed me with open arms. She introduced herself as an alumni of the university and proceeded to tell me about the great experiences she had as a student and the memories she created with her best friends in her “prime time”. As she rambled on, I realized that she said nothing about the stellar academics, the esteemed professors, or the endless professional opportunities offered at the University.…

Cities are carefully crafted. Most city planners and engineers would agree that, "Design is about creating spaces for people to enjoy and of course, creating moments where you elevate the spirit, but 'design for good ' is figuring out a program that not only creates better spaces, but creates jobs, new industry and raises the conversation about the way we build" (Cameron Sinclair). Although there are plenty of public places around Santa Clarita worth mentioning, the one that stands out the most to me is Main Street Newhall. Descried by the city's website as "an eclectic shopping, dining and entertainment destination that mixes rustic charm with cosmopolitan appeal. With boutique shopping, fine and casual dining, and Old West heritage, Old Town Newhall is the place to shop, gather with friends and family, and enjoy a day or night out on the town."…

Another implication of this study is that Lowell will be more age-friendly if older adults feel safe enough to walk around the City. The safer it is for people to walk in the community, the more willing people are to walk. In terms of walkability, the high score Lowell has of 77 suggest that Lowell is age-friendly as it is very walkable; however, there are improvements that can be made to the pedestrian environment to encourage walking in Lowell. Sidewalks need to be made more walkable; there needs to be more lighting at night; during snow weather, plowing the sidewalks should be prioritized; public transportation should be more reliable, affordable and frequent; specialized transportation should be made available for disabled people; bus stops and stations should be made more convenient, more frequent and more safe; pedestrian crossings should be sufficient in number and safe for people with different levels and types of disability, with nonslip markings, visual and audio cues and adequate crossing times; cycle paths should be made separate from pavements and other pedestrian walkways. Steps like this can ensure a community is more age-friendly and more walkable.…

However, the problem with using Human Flourishing to look at this problem is that it largely does not account for the value of the historical cultural property aspect of the sidewalks. While Human Flourishing takes into account the different values that people attach to the cultural property it does not take the stand-alone value of the property itself. With the people focused nature of Human Flourishing, it could be argued loses something in the actual value of property and the meaning of property itself as Human Flourishing does support accessibility over preservation of cultural…
