S feels some the side effects from medications are just as bad at the symptoms of Crohns. For example Humira (adalimumab) is a class of drug called disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), an immunosuppressive drugs that interfere with natural immune function to reduce the inflammation in his colon (Burchum & Rosenthal, 2016). These types of medications increase the risk of infection and cancer (Burchum & Rosenthal, 2016). After taking Methotrexate (another DMARD), S developed lungs problems. S has experienced three different pneumonia infections, sever pain at the injection site, decreased lung function and chronic fatigue. His SOB developed so severely that he failed his stress test. For example P is an RN and can safely administer S’s Humira and Methotrexate subcutaneous injections at home based on her previous experiences with medication administration and injections. S feels very fortunate that P can give him his medications because intense fatigue he experiences after his short. S and P shared with me that is significant source of frustration for both S and P is the intimacy level of their relationship. They both feel that S medications has affected his libido and therefore does not have much desire for intimacy. Their intimate connection for them is further hindered by S’s decreased lung function. He gets SOB so quickly that he is not able to partake in the physical aspects of intimate moments.
