The Sicily's Role In Politics

Improved Essays
The Sicily played a huge role in politics around the 1860’s. The Sicily started interfering with politics. “The Mafia became adept at political corruption and intimated people to vote for certain candidates, who were in turn beholden to the Mafia” (History). With them having an upper hand they controlled the majority of the votes. It was like the voters were scared of the Mafia so they obeyed without a thought. When the Nuovo Mafia came around they made society forget about Sicily. Nuovo Mafia were well respected. Nuovo Mafia were all about their money. They wanted to stop anything dealing with communists, land reformers, trade unionists, and socialists.

The top-down management style of the Mafia wouldn’t have survived as long as it has if it weren’t for everyone knowing their roles. The Boss gave orders to his underboss that sent the orders to the consignees then the soldiers and lastly the associates. And like in any other organization if there was any break in the roles the job would collapse. The associates of the Mafia were equivalent to the employees of any other company. They were the followers and could not do their jobs without direct guidance however they still had the freedom of creativity in the way they carried out their…

Politics Politics was undoubtedly a key factor leading to Tuscan Florentine becoming the most dominant vernacular in ‘Italy’. At the beginning of the 13th century there were between 200 to 300 independent city-states (communes) in northern and central Italy. They were governed by counsils and officials who were elected by the citizens, variously defined. Citizens identified themselves with their commune and the sense of campanilismo (the tendency to have more of an allegiance to a home place) was predominant. For centuries there was no overarching political centre in what is now Italy and population movement from one city-state to another for permanent residence was relatively rare.…

If scholars were to attempt to pinpoint the exact moment when Dante’s stance on Italian politics shifted towards a more distressed and discouraged perspective, his exile from Florence would be that moment. In his own words through the mouth-piece of Dante the pilgrim to his former teacher Brunetto Latini in Canto XV, Dante laments: “In the bright life above…I came into a valley and lost my way, before my age had reached its ripening time. I turned my back on the place but yesterday…” Through his time in the Florentine political sphere, Dante was no stranger to the severity of this sentence, having voted to exile fifteen prominent politicians just two years before his own exile. At best, as argued by Guy P. Raffa in his article “Dante’s Poetics…
