Despite what many think, the pharaohs of ancient Egypt did not succeed each other as an unbroken, patrilineal chain by any means. By the Eighteenth Dynasty, the state of kingship had recovered is authority from the Asiatic ruling of the Second Intermediate Period. Hatshepsut, one of the most well-known female kings of Egypt, is a clear outlier to what one would expect from a typical pharaoh. Hatshepsut With a ruling period of over 3000 years, Egypt has seen roughly 170 pharaohs, yet there are few outside of egyptologists that can name more than two or three off the top of their head. Not many remember these kings of the east, and it is even more difficult to when their mark on their own history was erased by their successors. Hatshepsut was one of the few, and by far one of the most successful female pharaohs in ancient Egypt. n 1817 François read a review of his paper titled ‘Egypt under the Pharaohs’ which was published by an anonymous Englishman which was really positive telling François that he should return and review his old research. It was speculated that this was written by Young but the allegations appeared fairly unlikely as Young was highly critical of François’ work. This was not necessarily positive as teaching consumed most of his and he could not do much research or go on local archeological finds. In the midst of all of this happening Young was still working on the Rosetta stone, in 1819 he published a major article in The Encyclopedia Britannica about ‘Egypt’…
