In the short story Orientation by Daniel Orozco, a new employee is introduced to his office and the workspace which he is going to working in. However, while the story is told from the perspective of the main character, throughout the story there is almost no focus on the main character, but instead on the people who he will be working around and interacting with in the future with in the office. The narrative in this story is from the person who is giving the new employee a tour of the office, and telling him different things about the people who work there. Instead of focusing on the main character, he focuses on the office space and the people that inhabit it from nine to five every business day. This approach is particularly enjoyable, and it was an effective way to keep the reader interested by presenting new information every paragraph, but not focusing too much on any one subject. This also forced the reader to come up with their own conclusion, and kept the story moving along at an exciting pace. Another reason why this story was interesting and effective is that many people can relate to working in an office building, and while it is commonly viewed as a mundane environment, Daniel Orozco shows that there is exhilarating and unusual people and things happening all around the office every day. Through his description of Anika Bloom, who may seem like a shy and normal girl, but deep down there is more going on and something very unusual about her and the surrounding events that she is involved in, to the description of lunch hours, the entire story puts you into the shoes of the new employee and makes it feel as though you are the new employee who is getting ready to claim your cubicle. I believe that the purpose of this story is to bring light to the fact that even in the situations that may be seen as dull, there are many things that happen and people who are unique and interesting. This brings a new sense of wonder when you apply this way of thinking to your own life and experiences, and makes things more interesting in everyday life.
