I chose the short story, Hangover by Jennifer Pashley.

The story clearly demonstrates the fascinating participation of the writer to rise up the issue of pollution in a piece of art, starting with a strawberry milkshake preferred by students in a school. In addition, the students fears their teacher addicted to a cigarette. Dirty atmosphere affects everyone life even animals, such as the laming dog,(Pashley, NA). Furthermore, “ a thousand dollars bail in your pocket, the bailiff, joining you outside for a cigarette.” (Pashley, NA) to allude that people do not care specifically whose concern is to make money. The story sadly ends at a hospital where health services cannot help the victims of hangovers. The dead , however, communicates

In A Skull in Connemara, Mairtin and Mick’s conversation regarding death by alcohol poisoning reveals the power of language to dictate human fate. Throughout their conversation, Mairtin and Mick use the word “sick” to describe vomit, with the phrase “drowned on sick” becoming a stand-in for death by asphyxiation on vomit (McDonagh 39). At first glance, these euphemisms seem to be simple ways of avoiding having to address death by its name. Their conversation, however, reveals deeper fears about the looming presence of death in their community.…

In “If I Sleep For an Hour, 30 People Will Die,” Pamela Druckerman tells the story of a man named Adolfo Kaminsky, who Druckerman calls “a hero of World War II,” and urges us to help other like he did. Kaminsky was a skilled forger who created passports from scratch for people on the verge of being arrested and sent to concentration camps. The group mainly worked with urgent cases: children being sent to Drancy, the internment camp for Jews. He hid the kids or smuggled them to Switzerland or Spain. It is estimated that Kaminsky could make thirty blank documents in an hour, but he dared not to sleep when he had work to do, thus his famous quote was born.…

is a heavily fact dependent piece where Joan Acocella reviews the theories of why we have hang-overs. She also include the biological reactions like experiencing withdrawal, dehydration, inflammation due to cytokines, and congeners. With these in mind she then continues on explaining how genetics have a crucial role in your chance of contracting a hangover. She claims that if your genes have less alcohol dehydrogenase in them you’re more than likely to have a negative response, like a hangover, to alcohol. While others experience little withdrawal symptoms and can break down alcohol better making them able to have a higher tolerance and a lower chance of a hangover.…

The article I read for this week named Hangovers by Jennifer Pashley. In my opinion, the article was about how a hangover can affect himself / herself and his / her family. Various vivid scenarios are presented in this article to alert readers the heart-wrenching ending of alcohol abuse. For example, Pashley described at the end of this article about a pity family: a drunk mother, a child with broken arm, a beaten dog, etc. (Pashley, 2014).…

Shimmering lights lit up the crowded streets of New York City like the stars of the night sky; they made up for the fact that you couldn’t see the real ones. My feet felt like concrete blocks attached to my legs as I walked, I guess you could call it, through numerous groups of locals and tourists, all I’m sure who could tell easily that I had quite an edge. They didn’t know why, and frankly neither did I. All I knew was that I wanted to be by her side. I had first encountered Mabel one random night when I stumbled upon the 42 Club after leaving work, grimy and dirty from fixing up snobby, rich guys' cars all day and hating my life.…

Drunken Escapades Intoxicated adults are extremely difficult to babysit and keep out of trouble; especially, when they cause troubling situations that affect everyone. I learned this while helping my boyfriend, Drew, watch his father while his mother, Rebecca, was at work for the night. At the beginning of the night, around five in the afternoon, my boyfriend, Drew, and I decided to take his father, Scot, to Jefferson’s for dinner. This seemed like a harmless idea.…

Women during the Victorian era lived in the private sphere of the world. In Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour”, Louise Mallard has a strong desire for freedom that she nearly receives, but ironically portrays into a tragedy disguised as a blessing. The desire for freedom has appeared throughout women within the late nineteenth century, which Kate Chopin experienced from a young age and becomes the voice for gender equality. To marry, run a household, raise children and be a perfect companion to the husband, are only some of the many roles a woman in the late nineteenth century had to fulfill.…

Repression of Women in the Early Centuries The stories, “The Story of an Hour,” and, “Hills Like White Elephants,” are very analogous in ways. “The Story of an Hour,” is about a girl who has been controlled by her husband throughout the years of their marriage. Her husband dies within the story and the woman is overwhelmed with pure joy, but she doesn’t know how to feel about it. “She did not stop to ask if it were not monstrous joy that held her. A clear and exalted perception enabled her to dismiss the suggestion as trivial” (DiYanni, 40).…

Moria Egan started off her poem with a powerful statement that relates to the majority of her readers. That statement is, "Things happen when you drink too much mescal.” (Egan). My interpretation is based off of her statement from her sonnet. Egan statement, "nothing good happens when you drink too much” is a true statement because of people have the tendency to regret their actions the morning after a night of drinking.…

Both of the questions I answered yes to were related. I had been drinking underage and I was found on campus (at the University of South Florida) highly intoxicated. When the officer asked me for my identification I did not have my valid drivers license on me at the time. I informed the officer that I was underage and I did not have my drivers license with me; after which, he contacted a peer to come pick me up from the location they found me and filed a police report on the incident. I had court hearing where the judge gave me twenty-four hours community service and dropped the charges after the community service was completed.…

Drinking, and particularly underage drinking is a possibility that seems to flood your consciousness when you step onto a college campus like the University of Georgia. It’s pervasive, and everyone who’s anyone seems to be doing it. Of course there are conscientious objectors, medical abstainers, and those who decide to just wait until they’re 21, but at least in my experience it seems that almost everyone falls into the camp that imbibes. One of the first things I did in college was decide I couldn’t beat them so I might as well join them.…
