Following the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager shot during a physical altercation in a gated Florida suburb there was a nationwide outrage sparked by the result of the case. Unfortunately, seventeen year old Trayvon Martin was just the first in a string of senseless homicides involving racial profiling and police brutality resulting in the deaths of a number young African Americans. Tamir Rice, Eric Harris, Walter Scott, Jonathan Ferrell, Sandra Bland, Samuel DuBose and Freddie Gray are just a few examples of those unjustly killed at the hands of the police and these are just the cases that managed to garner nationwide attention due to social media, just imagine the number of similar …show more content…
Inspired by the civil rights movement and others before it, the Black Lives Matter movement seeks to protest to gain political acknowledgement of the atrocities facing the black community in America and work with political leaders to rectify the issues that have plagued our communities for far too long. On their website, the Black Lives Matter movement describes itself as “an ideological and political intervention in a world where Black lives are systematically and intentionally targeted for demise. It is an affirmation of Black folks’ contributions to this society, our humanity, and our resilience in the face of deadly oppression.” However, the movement does not only seek advancement for African Americans, but for all, regardless of race, gender and sexual orientation. The Black Lives Matter Movement is very progressive in support of gender issues such as equal pay and reproductive rights for women and eliminating discriminatory policies based on sexual orientation and gender identity, which are all also huge talking points within our social atmosphere …show more content…
In their attempts they’ve not only trampled on the fundamental definition of what it means to be an American, but they’ve created misconceptions on the purpose of the movement. For example, there are those in opposition to the black lives matter movement who seem to believe that the movement insinuates that black lives are of more importance than others, but this is a classic example of misinformation. Black lives matter activists only seek to gain the acknowledgement that black lives matter just as much as anyone else’s, no more, no less. So I believe those who make the argument that “All Lives Matter” have completely missed the purpose of Black Lives Matter. To say that “All Lives Matter” detracts from the issues at hand, which is the fact that within our society, the black community is being systematically villainized, murdered and incarcerated at an alarmingly disturbing rate that far surpasses any other ethnic

Some people have been using the phrase “All Lives Matter” as a counter to the movement. I personally don’t think that is an appropriate response to the situation at hand. There is a very good analogy as to why, as Leonard Pitts Jr. explains.…

Black Lives Matter advocates against racial profiling, racism, and police brutality. Protesters have been able to come together to uphold their role in fighting for human rights and social justice. The cycle of marginalization will continue to repeat if more members of society refuse to take a stand against injustice. Upholding human rights and social justice have been enforced by movements like Black Lives Matter, especially regarding the lives lost of Yvette Smith, Eric Garner, and Tamir Rice.…

While the trials of these crimes air, we are aware of what had happened before they murdered occurred. The movement rapidly jumps to conclusion if the officer was provoked to shot the unarmed male. When the verdict is reached, the movement becomes outraged and believes violence will solve the problem. Destroying businesses, houses, and vehicles doesn’t solve anything. The lives that have been lost deserve to be seen as a message instead of a mockery.…

Forming an “All Lives Matter” group just pretends that the problem does not exist and ignores that fact that there have been multiple unwarranted police causalities against blacks. Elite Daily claims that the “All Lives Matter” Movement is simply counterproductive. It takes away from the fact that many black are victims of unwanted and unnecessary murders and simply just puts the light back on white Americans who have never been the victim of racial violence. It is undeniable that all lives matter, but what truly matters at this point is helping those who are in need. (Geena Goozdich) CNN Commentator, Donna Brazile summed it up by saying, “Of course ALL lives matter.…

Black Lives Matter: Movement or Hate Group “BlackLivesMatter is... intended to build connections between Black people and our allies to fight anti-Black racism, to spark dialogue among Black people, and to facilitate the types of connections necessary to encourage social action and engagement,” (Garza, Tometi, Cullors 2012). This quote was made directly by the founders of the Black Lives Matter movement. This movement was created in response to, or some may say, in vengeance of Trayvon Martin. Many people of the black community outraged by his death joined this movement with similar intentions. Although many found that peaceful acts to simply make those aware of the “dehumanization” the black community receives would be enough, many more feel…

Black Lives Matter is a relevant social movement that is misunderstood unjustly and faced with many problems such as media coverage and opponent groups and the American police force. On the Black Lives Matter website, they state “#BlackLivesMatter is a call to action and a response to the virulent anti-Black racism that permeates our society.” (BLM) Now compare to that to the definition of the Civil Rights movement “… an era dedicated to activism for equal rights and treatment of African Americans in the United States.” (“Civil Rights Movement, The” Roy).…

The Black Lives Matter movement (BLM) is one of good intentions, but a variety of flaws. The execution of BLM tends to be one that is counter-productive. The creators of the movement state that it is one that “…is an ideological and political intervention in a world where Black lives are systematically and intentionally targeted for demise. It is an affirmation of Black folks’ contributions to this society, our humanity, and our resilience in the face of deadly oppression” (Black Lives Matter, 2016). The Black Lives Matter movement is more than a call to action for police brutality, it’s a call for justice to stop the racial inequality that can still be seen today. It all started in 2013 when three women, Patrisse Cullors, Opal Tometi, and Alicia Garza, created the hashtag #blacklivesmatter after Trayvon Martin was placed on trial for his own murder while George Zimmerman, the man who killed him, was not held accountable (Black Lives). Many people were angered by this, so with the help of cultural workers, artists, and designers, the movement was able to expand beyond a social media hashtag to what you see today, a full fledged civil rights movement (Black Lives). The movement grew even larger in 2014 after Michael Brown, a black, unarmed…
